Geneva: Suzuki planning new sedan and Wagon R+
Suzuki is set to display a new mid-sized sedan based on its SX4 SUV at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the 4WD SX4, the new model will be front-wheel-drive only, and isn’t scheduled for release until 2009. In a surprising move, its developers have stated that there will be no diesel option. Instead, the new sedan will feature a 109hp (79kW) 1.6L gasoline engine that’s also shared with the SX4. However, US delivered models will get a more powerful V6 version with a five-speed automatic transmission.
Before the introduction of the new sedan, Suzuki will launch the successor to the Wagon R+ vehicle. Like its predecessor, the new five-door wagon will be built alongside its Opel Agila cousin at a plant in Rüsselsheimern, Germany. Styling will be heavily influenced by the Suzuki Splash concept pictured above that debuted at last year’s Paris Motor Show. Since this car won’t have a diesel option either, Suzuki engineers were forced to make its gasoline engine ultra-efficient. A 1.2L gasoline engine is currently being tested that’s claimed to achieve an impressive 78mpg rating for the combined cycle.
