With the help of car spies over at KGP Photography and the folks at Straightline, we have the first look at the next-generation Elantra compact sedan from Hyundai. Code-named "MD", the completely redesigned compact will carry a sleeker, coupe-like design alike that of the soon-to-be-released YF Sonata.
Ostensible in these spyshots, the 2011 (or 2012) Elantra continues Hyundai's recent tidal wave of attractive designs. The test mule's side-window profile evokes the current Elantra, yet replaces its roundiness with a sleeker and low-slung greenhouse arc. In addition to this prototype's sleek profile, the headlights stretch well up the fender as on the new Sonata. Another spyshot shows us a glimpse of the new interior, which seems to reflect the company's continued progress in interior design and materials. Even from the obstructed view, the new interior is visibly leaps ahead of its predecessor and even Kia's Forte compact.
As of this posting date, there is very little information about Hyundai's upcoming redesign of the Elantra. It is expected to be available in an array of new powertrains, including the Theta II 4-cylinder petrol which will surely replace the Beta inline-4 found in the current Elantra. Stay tuned for more information.
