Paris Show 2010 Highlights: 2011 Mercedes S250 CDI

Mercedes has revealed its new S250 CDI BlueEfficiency, which the company claims is the most fuel-efficient production luxury car, at the Paris motor show.

It achieves a fuel economy of 48mpg on the combined cycle and emits 149g/km of CO2, which Mercedes claims makes it the first in its class to dip under the 150g/km mark.

It is the first S-class to be given a four-cylinder diesel in the model’s 60-year history.

The 2.2-litre unit mated G-Tronic Plus 7-speed automatic transmission gives 201bhp and 369lb ft of torque at 1600rpm.

It will power the S250CDI from 0-60 in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 149mph.

This is made possible by the standard-fit ECO stop-start technology and high torque at low engine speeds achieved through two-stage turbocharging – from one high-pressure and one low-pressure turbocharger.

The new engine is part of a new range of four new petrol and diesel engines for the S-class. The other diesel, in the S350 BlueTEC, is a V6 which delivers 255bhp and emits 177 g/km of CO2.
