TCB Exclusive: 2009 Kia Spectra (TD) information

The slew of news tips and informations we get from our readers is undoubtedly the backbone of our posts. Last time, GreyhoundBoy87 sent us the first undisguised shots of the revised Kia Optima. This time, an avid reader of TCB named Gabriel Joo sent us an e-mail containing exclusive information of the next-generation Kia Spectra. This information is sourced from numerous testimonials from a private focus-group of the TD, which occurred in September of 2007.

The exterior is to take a major departure from the present designs in the line-up. Out are the bland and round shapes that make up the current Spectra and in comes sleeker lines in every corner of the car. The front fascia is to resemble the current JDM Honda Civic. The rear is often compared to the Lexus IS250's, but many state that it's a sharpened interpretation of the current Hyundai Elantra. At least in the domestic versions, the TD is to be available with push-start button, intelligent key, and a BMW-esque sharkfin antenna. Another option is a rear-view camera that appears on the rear-view mirror.

The domestic models will be available in three powertrain configurations; a 1.6L 4-cylinder that boasts 34MPG (14.4km/L), 2.0L Beta 4-cylinder, and a turbocharged 2.0L Beta 4 producing 180 horsepower. The North American models are to be also available with a 2.4L Theta 4-cylinder producing around 160~175 horsepower. The availability of the turbocharged 2.0L for the Korean market has been recently confirmed by a Chosun article. The TD is to be priced approximately 400 000 Won ($408 USD) higher than an equivalently-optioned Hyundai Elantra.

Other than the information above, details are mum as to how the new Spectra will materialize. Reports indicate the possible canning of the Spectra5, in favor of a 2-door coupe targeting the Honda Civic Coupe. Kia will give us a glimpse at the upcoming New York International Autoshow this month, when the automaker will be unveiling a preview concept of the TD.
