2012 Kia Rio Unveiled Ahead of Geneva Debut

Kia's product assault continues with the presentation of the all-new Rio subcompact, which will receive its world premiere together with the new Picanto at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show in the beginning of March.

The latest car to be revealed by Kia boasts a far slicker exterior design than the current Rio bringing it in line with the rest of South Korean company's passenger model range. There are no photos of the interior, but Kia says its newcomer "will deliver a high level of quality previously associated with larger models" along with a wider selection of trim options.

The Korean firm's Ford Fiesta-sized vehicle features a wheelbase extended by 70 mm (to 2,570 mm) compared to the outgoing Rio thus promising to offer improved passenger space together with an increased cargo capacity to 292 liters for the hatchback body style. Exterior dimensions changes include: +55 mm (overall length), -15 mm (height) and +25 mm (overall width).

In Europe, the firm's B-Segment contender will be offered with a comprehensive range of petrol and diesel engines including a 1.1-liter diesel unit delivering 70-horsepower and CO2 emissions from as low as 85 g/km.

But the big surprise is the announcement of an all-new 1.2-liter Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) that will be available from 2012, and which will offer the Koreans a significant advantage over its Japanese rivals.

Soon-Nam Lee, Director of Overseas Marketing for Kia, commented: “This new model is a big step forward. The Rio has always been successful, and with this new incarnation we have a car that people will want to buy for its looks.”

The new Rio will go on sale in Europe as a 5-door model this fall, with a 3-door to be introduced into the range in early 2012. Pricing and full range details will be announced nearer the on-sale date.

Kia Dealer in Canada Announces Possible Picanto Sales in North America?

UPDATE: A Kia Canada representative kindly let us know today that the Picanto will NOT be available in the North American (and Australian) market. We repeat: the all-new 2012 Kia Picanto will NOT be coming over to the North American market. Sad truth indeed.

Unintended leak or just a product of your run-of-the-mill, uninformed car salesperson? It's probably the latter. But we're clinging to the post with the hopes that Kia bring the stylish Picanto minicar over to North American shores. According to a Canadian Kia dealer in Nanaimo, British Columbia, our wishes may come true? This is the bit that caught us off guard in their "press release":

"The all-new 2012 Kia Picanto will be available with four super-efficient 1.0L three-cylinder and 1.2L four-cylinder Kappa engines. It will soon be available at Nanaimo Kia dealer, Harris Kia."

"The 2012 Kia Picanto will soon be available at Harris Kia, the top Kia dealer in Nanaimo BC."

Are we coming off as too desperate to you guys? We think it's the perfect time period to bring the Picanto over. How about you? Leave us a comment after the jump.

Kia Unveils 2.0-liter Turbo Sportage SX in Montreal

Following the footsteps of Hyundai's surprise debut of the all-new Accent sedan and hatchback, Kia made an unexpected unveiling of the 2011 Sportage SX at the Montreal International Auto Show today, debuting a 2.0-litre turbo gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine that produces 256 horsepower (according to Motor Trend) and is projected to achieve four-cylinder like fuel economy. The new Sportage SX will start at $36,995 (Canadian dollar) and include Kia’s new UVO infotainment technology and additional standard equipment.

Kia has not released the full specs of the Sportage SX, but we do know that it will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It includes a new feature designed to improve fuel economy (Kia's take on start/stop technology) called Neutral Control that effectively shifts the car into neutral when stuck in traffic. The system is triggered when the transmission is in Drive and the brakes have been applied for more than two seconds. An integrated hill assist control prevents any vehicle rollback.

Standard features on the SX include push-button start, panoramic sunroof, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, ventilated driver’s seat, UVO infotainment system, seven-speaker premium sound system, rear spoiler, leather seating and auto-dimming mirror with Homelink.

The 2011 Sportage will be available in LX, EX and SX trim levels, with the LX and EX powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine.

2011 Kia Optima Earns an Edmunds' InsideLine.com Editors' Most Wanted Award

Our friends over at Edmunds' InsideLine.com recently named the new 2011 Kia Optima as an "Editors' Most Wanted" Award winner. The Optima was one of six vehicles to receive the accolade and the only mid-size sedan to be honoured.

The 2011 Kia Optima has been receiving much adulation from the media since its unveiling and the editors of Inside Line were no different, praising the car for its "comfortable cabin, excellent mileage and plenty of features." In the review of the vehicle, Inside Line called the Optima "an affordable family car that looks, feels and drives a class higher."

The other five cars that received the recognition were the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Honda Odyssey, and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (which also won the 'Instant Classic' award).

"The Edmunds' Inside Line 'Editors' Most Wanted(SM)' Award winners are chosen for one simple reason: They're the cars, trucks, and vans that we like the best," said Ed Hellwig, Editor of InsideLine.com. "'Editors' Most Wanted' winners are the cars that we remember the most even after hundreds of test drives. These are cars that we'd buy for ourselves and highly recommend to our friends and family."

The Edmunds' InsideLine.com "Editors' Most Wanted(SM)" Awards are awarded annually to six vehicles based on the votes of 11 Edmunds' Inside Line editors. Every car and truck for sale in the United States is eligible for the "Editors' Most Wanted" award if tested by Edmunds' Inside Line by December 1st.

Kia Cee'd SW 2.0 CRDi GS sprouts a load lugger in the shape of the SW-badged estate version

The Kia Cee’d is growing fast. In addition to the five-door hatchback already on sale, an exciting three-door model will reach UK showrooms later this year, and there’s a convertible due in 2008, too.

But if you’re in need of a practical holdall, the company has another variant to suit you. Called the SW, it’s the new Cee’d estate, and it hits British dealers in September.

Auto Express drove one of the first examples in Korea in Issue 962, and gave it the thumbs up. Now the newcomer has arrived in Europe, has it got what it takes to beat established load-luggers from Ford and Vauxhall?

Well, the SW is certainly distinctive. Designed in Germany and built in Slovakia, the new estate features a sleek tail with a neat cut through the rear windows, similar to those on Peugeot’s 407 SW. And with some chunky, silver-painted roof bars, it looks the part.
2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, Auto Show, Renault At 4.5 metres, the Cee’d SW is 235mm longer than the five-door. The extra length has been added behind the rear seats. So, although there’s no additional legroom in the back and only a little more headroom, luggage capacity measures 534 litres – nearly 200 litres more than the hatchback.

The seats split 60: 40 and fold completely flat, giving a maximum space of 1,664 litres, which beats the estate versions of the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. But the SW isn’t simply big. The bootlid hinges have been positioned as far into the roof as possible, which makes the opening enormous.
2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, Auto Show, Renault Add in minimal wheelarch intrusion and a low loading lip, and it’s easy to get large items into the back. Even if you’re not carrying anything bulky, the SW is still brilliantly practical, as there are handy storage trays underneath the boot floor and lots of hooks. A big cargo net is included, and there’s a 12V power point, too.

Up front, the cabin is unchanged from the five-door’s, which means there’s a reach and rake-adjustable steering wheel, a well built, logically laid-out dashboard and a USB connection for an MP3 player on the centre console. From base S through LS to top GS trim, all models get air-conditioning as standard.

Three 1.6-litre engines – a 120bhp petrol, plus 89bhp and 113bhp diesels – will be available from September. Our test car had a 138bhp 2.0-litre oil burner that is likely to arrive in March. It provides punchy acceleration, is frugal and produces only 154g/km of CO2. Most buyers will be happy with the 113bhp 1.6-litre diesel, though.
On the move, the Cee’d SW has one obvious weakness. Engineers have stiffened the estate’s rear end to cope with extra loads, and this, combined with the already firm suspension set-up, means it’s not the most comfortable car over uneven surfaces. However, the trade-off for this is good body control, and with accurate steering, the SW feels agile, if ultimately not that much fun. It’s a decent long-distance car, with supportive seats and hardly any road or engine noise making it into the cabin.

So has Kia got a winner on its hands? When you factor in a starting price of around £12,500 for the base S model and a seven-year warranty, the answer has to be yes. The SW is a spacious, practical and well thought-out estate car that’s a worthy addition to the Cee’d range.Rival: Ford Focus 2.0 ZetecThe Focus is more fun to drive and has a higher-quality interior than the Cee’d. But when you look more closely, the Ford isn’t quite such a tempting package – its load area is much smaller and the price around £2,000 higher.

2012 Kia Morning/Picanto: First Official Images [UPDATE]

Kia pulled a surprise move today and released the first official images of the redesigned Picanto (Morning in the Korean market) hatchback today. The all-new minicar is set to go on sale in its home market of South Korea later this month, ahead of its European debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March.

Heading into its second-generation, the new Kia Picanto is a stylistically more aggressive evolution of its more mundane predecessor. The front end is definitely a tribute to the Venga MPV, but the most noteworthy element of the design is its protruding front bumper. The large air intakes that fill the bumper evoke thoughts of the Mazda2's controversial smiley face, and we don't know if that's necessarily a good association. The corporate grille could be a tad larger in our opinion, as it seems to have been dwarfed by what's going on below. The side and the rear fascia are easier on the eyes, and we especially like the unique treatment of the taillights (remember the Carens/Rondo?) as well as the protruding rear bumper design.

Spec-wise, Kia has not revealed much information for the new Picanto. The automaker did mention features like dual projection headlamps with LED positioning lights, a rarity for the subcompact segment the car plays in. As well, it will be powered by an all-new 1.0-liter Kappa engine that is expected to achieve impressive fuel economy.

Stay tuned for more information and images as they become available.

Hyundai and Kia Recall 2011 Santa Fe and 2011 Sorento for Defective Brakes

Hyundai and Kia have issued separate recalls for the 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2011 Kia Sorento respectively over the same issue concerning the rear brake calipers that may not have been properly machined.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the defective calipers could lead to brake fluid leak, followed by illumination of the malfunction indicator light indicating the brake fluid level is low and should be checked, then a soft or spongy brake pedal feel. If the problem is not taken care of, it will lead to reduced braking power.

The recall affects some 7,697 Kia Sorentos manufactured from September 14, 2010, through October 4, 2010, and 1,783 Hyundai Santa crossovers Fe built from September 28, 2010, through November 25, 2010.

Naturally, dealers from both automakers inspect the rear calipers and replace it if necessary free of charge. The two companies have not yet provided an owner notification schedule.

Kia Reveals First Rendering of 2012 Picanto on Facebook

Kia Motors has revealed the first official rendering of the all-new, redesigned 2012 Kia Picanto, due for unveiling next March at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Styled by Kia's European design team based in Frankfurt, under the direction of Peter Schreyer, the all-new Picanto will sport a more aggressive and appealing design compared to its predecessor. The front fascia evokes a striking resemblance to that of the larger Venga compact MPV, while the rear fascia is highlighted by an eye catching set of Euro-styled taillights that recall the now-defunct Rondo/Carens MPV.

The Picanto will likely come powered by the same Euro-5 compliant 1.2 liter Kappa petrol/gasoline engine as the Hyundai i10, with which it shares a platform. It will come in both 3-door and 5-door hatch configurations.

Kia has unveiled the 2011 Optima Hybrid at the Los Angeles Auto Show recently.

Created specifically for the U.S. market, the car features a full parallel hybrid system which consists of a 168 PS (124 kW / 166 hp) 2.4-liter petrol engine and a 30 kW (41 PS / 40 hp) electric motor. To get these impressive features, Kia engineers optimized the petrol engine and installed a 34 kW lithium-ion battery which enables the hybrid to operate in EV mode at speeds up to 100 km/h (62 mph).

On the styling front, the Hybrid is distinguished by a reduced ride height (lowered 5mm), a revised grille, and unique 16-inch alloy wheels with low-rolling resistance tires.
