Hot News: Jaguar XF Estate

A fastback, sporting estate version of the XF is in Jaguar’s future product plan, with a production date slated for around 2012.

That will coincide with the facelift of the XF, when changes are expected to include a bolder grille inspired by the new XJ.

Estate versions of the XF’s main rivals, the Audi A6, BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class, all sell well and in the UK make the difference between the XF being the third best-seller in its class rather than market leader.

For several years after the launch of the load-lugging X-type, the words ‘estate’ and ‘Jaguar’ appeared to be banned from appearing in the same sentence, but now that the X-type has been killed off, the idea of a Jaguar estate is acceptable again inside the company.

But this won’t be some sort of Volvo-style load lugger. Expect elegant styling incorporating a shade more practicality to be the defining features.

The new four-cylinder diesel engine currently under development will be key. Small-capacity four-cylinder diesels account for 50 per cent of sales among rival executive models in the UK, and the proportion is even higher for the more practical estate body shape.

Details of the engine are scarce, but it is thought to be a variant of the 2.2-litre Ford/PSA unit used by Land Rover, but thoroughly re-engineered to reach the refinement levels that owners expect. Peak power is likely to be close to 200bhp in its most powerful version, possibly with twin turbochargers.

New Concept Car: Mitsubishi i-MiEV Cargo

Mitsubishi also present at the Tokyo show will be a new cargo van-version of Mitsubishi's tiny i-MiEV electric city car. Eschewing the rear doors and seats for a 62 cubic-foot flat-floored cargo area, the i-MiEV Cargo is designed with small businesses in mind. It offers 100-mile range, though it will no doubt be affected by the cargo load, as will the performance of the 63-hp 133 lb-ft electric motor.

While the i-MiEV Cargo is slated for production in Japan, the future of the PX-MiEV isn't known yet. Even if the concept doesn't make it into production, look for the design and technology to make their way into other Mitsubishi products in the future.

New Concept Car: Mitsubishi PX-MiEV

With the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show less than a month away, the few remaining participating automakers are throwing down their cars. Following Subaru and Honda to the table is Mitsubishi with a new plug-in hybrid crossover called the PX-MiEV and a cargo van version of the i-MiEV electric car.

Looking something like an updated Endeavour with a touch of Land Rover styling, the PX-MiEV is Mitsubishi's centerpiece. Though it may look something like the Endeavour, the PX-MiEV -- which stands for Plug-in hybrid Crossover - Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle -- is actually closer in size to the Outlander but slightly larger. While the hard, boxy yet simple styling is a big step forward for Mitsubishi crossovers, the real story is what lies beneath.

The PX-MiEV is powered by Mitsubishi's first hybrid drivetrain and rather than follow the Toyota and Honda route, Mitsubishi has skipped ahead to a plug-in series hybrid right out of the gate. Under the hood is a 114-hp 1.6L DOHC MIVEC four-cylinder engine with 92 lb-ft of torque that can either power the wheels directly or act as a generator to power the electric motors. The two 60-hp electric motors generating 148 lb-ft of torque each are mounted on the axles and can propel the car by themselves or work in concert with the gasoline engine. Mitsubishi says the combination is good for an impressive 118 mpg.

At low to medium speeds, the front electric motor does most of the work by powering the front wheels. At higher speeds or when more power is needed, the gasoline engine kicks on to either make more electricity to power the electric motors or to help power the wheels directly, depending on which the onboard computer thinks will be more efficient. The rear electric motor only comes on when the front wheels are slipping, under hard acceleration or under sudden maneuvers to help stabilize the vehicle. The electric motors also act as generators during braking to recharge the battery.

Spied: 2011 Volkswagen Golf

One of our daring spy photographers just sent us over these photos of two Volkswagen development mules undergoing testing. The lack of camouflage shouldn't be a surprise, as all the important changes are beneath the metal.

The white mule with the wide, black fenders wears a serial number with the letters MQB. This is the acronym for the next Golf platform, meaning modular querbaukasten (that's modular transverse component system in English). The first iteration of the new platform will underpin the next Audi A3. With the current PQ35-platform Golf VI reportedly ending production in December 2011, it would make sense for the next-gen Golf to appear around the same time. Say, the Frankfurt show in September 2011?

The black mule, conversely, wears PQ35 platform designation. Yet this mule is wider, the fuel cap is in a different place, and our spy reckons it's a bit shorter than the current Golf. Curious, indeed.

USA: 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring Adds GLS Trim

2010 Hyundai Elantra TouringPRESS RELEASE: HYUNDAI EXPANDS ELANTRA TOURING LINEUP WITH NEW GLS MODEL

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. -
When introduced in 2009, the all-new more functional variant of Hyundai’s popular Elantra sedan, Elantra Touring, was looked at as one of best bargains in the industry. Now the Elantra Touring gets even better for 2010 by adding an all-new entry-level GLS model. The new GLS trim is slated to hit dealerships this summer.

“With the Elantra Touring GLS we will drop the base price by about $1,300 without taking away sophisticated features like Electronic Stability Control, four wheel disc brakes or the iPod/USB/Auxiliary jacks,” said Mark Dipko, product manager for the Elantra Touring. “And, the optional built in roof rack offers even more versatility to the class leading interior.”

ELANTRA TOURING GLS - THE GOOD STUFF COMES STANDARD

Elantra Touring GLS builds on Hyundai’s reputation for offering loads of standard equipment, offering air conditioning, power windows, heated mirrors, power door locks, remote keyless entry with alarm, four-way adjustable driver’s seat and plenty of storage compartments. The Elantra Touring also offers standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), in addition to a host of other class-leading safety technologies.

For audiophiles, an integrated 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers and iPod/USB/Auxiliary inputs is standard.

The optional Popular Equipment Package on the GLS adds roof rails, a telescopic steering wheel, steering wheel mounted audio controls, trip computer, eight-way driver’s seat with lumbar support, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, sliding sunvisors, seatback pockets, cooled glovebox, retractable cargo cover, fog lights, illuminated ignition and premium cloth interior. Cruise control is also standard on all GLS models equipped with automatic transmissions.

ELANTRA SE – ADDING A SPORTY FLAVOR

The sport-oriented SE adds all the equipment in the GLS Popular Equipment Package plus a power sunroof with tilt and slide functions, heated front seats, leather steering wheel and shift knob, B&M Racing sport shifter and 17-inch alloy wheels with P215/45R17 tires.

DEVELOPMENT

The Elantra Touring, with its modern, sleek styling and fun-to-drive qualities, was developed by Hyundai in response to the growing demand for stylish and functional five-door vehicles. Five-door vehicle sales doubled from 2001 to 2006 and are projected to be strong heading into the next decade. As with all Hyundai vehicles, the Elantra Touring was designed and manufactured to meet the most stringent quality standards in the industry, exemplifying Hyundai’s quality leadership position worldwide.

ASSERTIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN

Flowing curves and strong character lines highlight the broad stance and long wheelbase of the Elantra Touring. The clearly defined, unbroken, rising beltline unifies the vehicle’s functional proportions. The effect is an exciting shape that provides a dynamic impression of performance and capability. Elantra Touring has a low coefficient of drag for optimal fuel efficiency at highway speeds and minimal interior noise.

Up front, the pronounced dual air intakes flow smoothly into the hood and A-pillar lines. Sharp projection headlamps, available fog lights and available 17-inch alloy wheels complete the modern design.

ROOMY AND REFINED INTERIOR

The long wheelbase and generous width of the Elantra Touring, combined with Hyundai’s expertise in interior packaging, have produced an interior that delivers class-leading comfort, functionality and practicality. At 125.5 cubic feet, the Elantra Touring has the most interior volume (passenger volume plus cargo space) of any five-door in its class. In fact, Elantra Touring’s cargo capacity is 65.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, resulting in more cargo space than other wagons and crossovers.

The Elantra Touring was developed from the beginning as a driver’s car. The clarity of the instruments, optional B&M Racing sport shifter, optional tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and a supportive four-way adjustable driver’s seat all contribute to a superior driving experience. For extra clarity, Hyundai’s signature blue LCD lighting technology has been used for the central information display and gauge cluster. Two-tone beige interior trim, with special attention to the upholstery fabrics and materials, delivers a more premium feel. Black and beige are the two interior color choices.

The Elantra Touring is the only compact five-door to offer XM Satellite Radio® and iPod® /USB auxiliary inputs as standard equipment. When an iPod or flash drive is connected through the USB port not only does it play music through the vehicle’s six-speaker audio system, but it also charges the iPod and allows the driver to access tracks with the steering wheel audio controls. This system also allows both driver and passengers to easily view song/artist/title information and control the music from the audio head unit rather than from the iPod itself. The center storage compartment location of the iPod/USB auxiliary inputs assures that iPods can be safely stowed out of sight.

INTELLIGENT ERGONIMICS

With its leading-edge designs, Hyundai has proven through the years that vehicles do not need to be large to feel spacious, nor carry a premium price when offering intelligently designed interior cabins. The Elantra Touring is just the latest expression of this thoughtful approach, incorporating conveniently located steering wheel audio/cruise controls and column stalks, easy-to-reach heating and air conditioning knobs, as well as conveniently positioned power windows and mirror controls. Even the positioning and precise feel of the automatic gearshift has been optimized. The integrated 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system, map pockets and other storage areas round out the conveniently and intelligently designed interior space.

Sporty front seats, designed to complement the athletic driving dynamics of the vehicle, and carefully contoured rear seats, provide long distance comfort and support. Hyundai engineers focused not just on the seats’ form and function, but also on the stitching, materials and bolstering. The optional eight-way driver’s seat is fully height adjustable and includes lumbar support. The result is seating fit for the spirited driving that Elantra Touring inspires.

IMPRESSIVE PACKAGE EFFICIENCY

The Elantra Touring’s exterior dimensions (176.2 inches long, 69.5 inches wide and 59.8 inches high) make it a great fit in the compact five-door segment, while its long wheelbase (106.3 inches) means that Elantra Touring offers class-leading interior volume. Elantra Touring features outstanding front legroom and front and rear shoulder room. In addition, every Elantra Touring has 60/40 split folding rear seats that fold when needed for added storage, functionality and practicality.

The Elantra Touring matches best-in-class passenger volume with best-in-class cargo capacity. Features include a useful 24.3 cubic feet of luggage space with rear seats upright and a cavernous 65.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. As in any Hyundai, the utility and convenience in the Elantra Touring has not been overlooked, with a stow-and-go removable luggage cover that stores conveniently out-of-site under the trunk area compartment. An optional restraining net is also offered. The optional roof rails are designed to accommodate lifestyle oriented rack systems to take Elantra Touring’s utility to even higher level.

The Elantra Touring includes a number of convenient, standard stowage and storage features, including a sunglass holder, two front and two rear cupholders, door bottle holders, dash storage, central console storage, front storage tray, front seatback pockets and a cargo area under-floor storage. For tailgaters, the cargo area also has a power-retained 12-volt outlet, where the vehicle does not have to be turned on, for portable electronic devices.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE

Elantra Touring is powered by the same fuel-efficient 2.0-liter, in line four-cylinder found in the Elantra sedan. This sophisticated 16-valve powerplant employs Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) and Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for a very broad power band, coupled with high fuel efficiency and low emissions. Elantra Touring is certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV). With a manual transmission, the Elantra Touring’s EPA mileage is XX mpg City and XX mpg Highway. With the optional four-speed automatic transmission, the Elantra Touring’s EPA rating is XX mpg City and XX mpg Highway.

TRANSMITTING THE POWER

Hyundai understands that performance means more than just engine output, which is why transmission choices have been optimized for real driving satisfaction.

An ergonomically located gear gated shift controls the Elantra Touring’s four-speed automatic transmission delivering confident mode selection. A unique-in-segment optional B&M Racing sport shifter delivers smooth, short-throw shift control for the standard five-speed manual transmission.

AGILE STEERING, SUSPENSION AND BRAKING

The Hyundai Elantra Touring offers a dynamic driving experience. A MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension have been fitted to perfectly complement the body structure’s high rigidity. Ventilated 11.8-inch front and solid 10.3-inch rear discs with ABS and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) provide excellent stopping power with added handling control.

Elantra Touring delivers high performance steering and adds unique springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and dampers. Elantra Touring features a 24 percent stiffer front spring rate, a 39 percent stiffer rear spring rate, a larger front stabilizer bar (24 mm) and larger rear stabilizer bar (21mm) than the Elantra sedan. The 17-inch alloy wheels, with ultra-low profile tires, add visual impact and extra grip to the Elantra Touring’s sporty dynamics. The result is a car that simply demands to be driven.

Elantra Touring steering character is another key driver of its sporty driving nature. Hyundai chassis engineers focused on delivering an agile feel, with direct responses to driver inputs. That spirit translates to a fun-to-drive character in everyday driving situations. And all drivers will appreciate Elantra Touring’s nimble turning diameter – at 34.2 feet it is better than Volkswagen Rabbit’s 35.7 feet and Toyota Matrix’s 36.0 feet.

UNSURPASSED STANDARD SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

Like every Hyundai, top-tier safety was a key development goal for the Elantra Touring, which is fully equipped to protect driver and passengers. In terms of passive safety, it features dual front, side and curtain airbags, for a total of six protective airbags in the vehicle. The Elantra Touring also features active front head restraints, seatbelt pretensioners and seatbelt reminders. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 52 percent, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Also according to the IIHS, active front head restraints improve rear crash protection.

These passive safety technologies are fully grounded in a state-of-the-art body structure, which includes deformable zones, occupant protection cell and three-way load distribution technology. Further rigidity has been achieved with reinforced A pillars, strengthened bulkhead, front and side members, and strengthened B and C pillars.

All Elantra Tourings come standard with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry’s most effective life-saving technologies. ESC compares the driver’s intended course with the vehicle’s actual response. It then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces engine power as needed in certain driving circumstances to help correct understeer or oversteer. National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) studies show passenger cars equipped with ESC experience 30 percent fewer fatalities in single-vehicle crashes.

In developing and refining the safety features of the Elantra Touring, Hyundai employed advanced design systems and sophisticated computer simulation, combined with intensive component testing. This is a process used in the development of all Hyundai vehicles. From drawing board and prototype testing to final product development, Hyundai uses this extensive process to assure that all its vehicles – including the Elantra Touring – meet or exceed government safety standards, as well as the expectations of vehicle buyers.

AMERICA’S BEST WARRANTY

The 2009 Elantra Touring is protected by the Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty. Coverage includes five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper protection, 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty and seven-year/unlimited mileage anti-perforation coverage. Hot News Up Date: Jaguar XE

Jaguar’s next generation of sports cars is on the verge of ditching its E-type-inspired oval grille because the design isn’t sufficiently adaptable.

The company’s designers are struggling to stretch the shape to fit the nose of the two new models: the XK and new XE.

“The problem is that the proportions are all wrong when the shape is stretched. They’re not sure if it has got much more life left,” said an insider.

The solution also hasn’t been decided yet, although it could be argued that a shape like that of the new XJ/XF grille makes sense for a small car company like Jaguar, which could boost its brand clarity by focusing on a single, memorable grille design.

Getting the BMW Z4-sized front-engined, rear-drive XE to market is taking longer than some insiders had hoped. Although the two-seater is being planned in aluminium as a platform derivative of the next-generation XK coupé and convertible, the exact direction of each model is the subject of a fierce debate internally.

One faction reckons the next XK needs to get bigger and more luxurious to make room for the smaller car. That envisages the XK growing up to a size close to Maserati’s GranTurismo and featuring a pair of proper rear seats.

But another wants the XK to keep to its current theme and dimensions, which historically has been the foundation of its sales. The challenge is engineering the two cars on the same platform so they share costly elements like the front bulkhead and engine bay, but are also positioned sufficiently apart from each other to appeal to different customers at different price points.

Hot News: Jaguar Hatchback to Launch in 2014

Jaguar is working on a dramatically styled five-door sports hatch featuring lightweight alloy bodywork and new, direct-injection V6 petrol engines.

Priced from £40k, the compact five-door is pencilled in for production around 2014, when it will line up alongside a new front-engined sports car and an estate version of the XF as extensions to Jaguar’s model line-up.

Intended as a luxurious but practical five-seater combining excellent fuel economy with good performance and handling, the sports hatch still awaits the production go-ahead, but is being championed at the highest levels of the company.

New Concept Car: Honda Skydeck

Honda is testing reaction to a future rival for the Ford S-Max with this, the Skydeck hybrid concept.

This sleek MPV is likely to replace the FR-V for Europe, although it has a more conventional three rows of seats instead of the previous car’s two benches.

The car’s proportions are only slightly smaller than those of the Ford, and it is substantially larger than the FR-V in all but width.

Honda is keen to expand its hybrid range into a number of different segments, and that is likely to include people carriers.

“Honda wants to introduce a range of hybrid vehicles that appeal to different markets,” a source told Autocar. “There are currently no plans to put the Skydeck into production, but you can see the way we are going with this.”

One significant feature of the Skydeck is that it relocates the Insight’s hybrid system battery, which normally lies beneath the rear floor to save on passenger space.

The battery is now mounted within the centre console that runs along the cabin floor. It may be a key feature of a next-generation Honda IMA hybrid system designed to power bigger vehicles.

There’s no word on engines; this concept is designed to gauge reaction to the styling and three-row seating layout.

For this show MPV, Honda has installed slim, lightweight sports seats with mesh backrests. The second row slides forward and under the front seats to maximise space.

The front doors hinge up and forward, while the rears slide backwards to allow access to the airy cabin.

New Concept Car: Honda CR-Z

Combining a potent cocktail of styling hints from the Insight, Odyssey and Civic Type R, the production-ready Honda CR-Z 2009 concept's stunning lines will take center stage at Honda's stand when the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show opens on October 21.

Slated for a February 2010 launch in Japan and later that year in the U.S., the world's first dedicated sports hybrid coupe employs a 1.5-liter gasoline engine paired to an updated version of Honda's now well-known IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) system. Upgraded from the Insight's 41 mpg 1.3 liter unit, one source close to Honda tells that we can expect somewhere around 32-35 U.S. mpg from the new coupe. Helping the front-wheel-drive CR-Z to achieve that kind of mileage will be the hybrid world's first six-speed manual gearbox, which Honda engineers have fitted to generate the best mileage possible while at the same time injecting more fun into the driving experience of hybrids. And anything that spruces up the thrill factor of piloting a hybrid is welcome news to us.

In fact, with its combination of meaty bottom end torque from the larger 1.5-liter engine and its revised IMA system, all channeled through that six-speed floor-shifter, you can expect some relatively quick getaways from the CR-Z.

Spied Up Date: 2011 Volkswagen Touareg

One of our spy photographers just caught the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg undergoing testing as it nears its spring debut. As we reported in July, the next iteration of the popular SUV will be lighter and more fuel efficient, and will offer a third-row seat. The camouflage it's wearing here doesn't reveal any surprises, but you can safely expect Walter da Silva's look of a wide grille and horizontal lines.

To rid the Touareg of 550 to 650 lbs., VW is moving the formerly standard off-road equipment to the options list. The V-8 is an engine of the past; its replacement is a supercharged V-6. A 3.0L diesel is expected, too.

Expect a debut sometime around the Detroit auto show in January.

Hot News: Toyota Recalls 3.8 Million Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today advised owners of specific Toyota and Lexus models to remove their driver's side floor mats. According to the NHTSA, some floor mats can cause the gas pedal to stick, creating a potentially fatal situation.

The affected models follow:
• 2007-2010 Camry
• 2005-2010 Avalon
• 2004-2009 Prius
• 2005-2010 Tacoma
• 2007-2010 Tundra
• 2007-2010 ES 350
• 2006-2010 IS 250 and IS350

Earlier this month, it is believed that a stuck floor mat in a Lexus ES350 caused a crash that killed a California Highway Patrol officer and his family of three. According to the NHTSA, Toyota and Lexus will launch a safety recall soon. Some 3.8 million vehicles are expected to be affected by the recall.

Whether the problem is improperly secured mats, bulky and poor fitting aftermarket mats, or an issue of gas pedal clearance, the NHTSA is taking no precautions. "The agency strongly recommends taking out removable floor mats on the driver's side in certain models and not to replace them with any other mat, either from Toyota or any other brand," it said in a statement.

New Car: 2009 Hyundai Equus Limousine

Korea's substantial executive market will have one more model to choose from when deciding which luxury limousine to buy. Hyundai recently unveiled its latest Equus Limousine, which promises to offer more comfort and luxury than its closest competitors, the Lexus LS460L and Mercedes-Benz S500L.

An additional 12 inches has been tacked onto the stock Equus chassis making for an overall length of around 215 inches. Aside from the extra length, designers installed a horizontal crossbar grille to further distinguish the edition's exterior. Find your way inside and you'll be treated to powered footrests, plush leather, fine woods, a rear seat leg support, and seats with what the automaker calls a Relax Posture Control and Massage System function.

The brand's widely used Lambda 3.8L V-6 and Tau 5.0L V-8 motors can be specified to power the Equus Limo, and there's even a bulletproof edition for those looking for the ultimate in protection.

Hyundai estimates the limo will retail for around $113,000 to $122,180 when it hits Korean dealers in the coming months. Currently there are no plans to export the car to world markets, although the regular Equus sedan is officially U.S.-bound. But if it did come here, and if you were in the market for a luxo-limo, would you consider it over the best from Germany and Japan?

New Concept Car: Subaru Hybrid Tourer

Skimming through the Subaru Hybrid Tourer concept press release, the second paragraph left us a little confused. “The original point of the ideal grand touring car is its interior design, featuring four independent and comfortably positioned seats. Passengers are enclosed within an atmosphere that provides a surpassing feeling of openness and stress-free reassurance, through the further pursuit of a human-centered philosophy, the essence of Subaru car design, and the incorporation of functions that are friendly to passengers.” Say what? After some head scratching, what we divined from reading that jargon is that this car has four seats and it’s about the essence of nothingness.

Spied: 2012 Hyundai Accent/Verna (RB) - EXCLUSIVE

Hyundai Accent RBTruth be told, we have very little, if not no information on Hyundai's upcoming redesign for the subcompact Accent. Sold as the Verna overseas, the Korean automaker's subcompact offering is one of the most popular models in the brand's line-up. The current generation Accent has been on sale since 2005 and has recently received minor cosmetic changes in the Korean market. However, it is starting to show its age in Hyundai's rapidly modernizing line-up and elicits the need for a complete overhaul. If Hyundai's recent wave of impressive redesigns is any indication, the upcoming redesigned Accent, code-named "RB", is sure to astonish people yet again like how the redesigned Tucson and Sonata have done so.

From the spy shots, it is very apparent that the redesigned Accent is essentially a miniaturized counterpart of the YF Sonata. Another embodiment of Hyundai's new "Fluidic Sculpture" design scheme, the RB Accent incorporates a steeper windshield rake, stretched headlamps, sleek side profile, short front & rear overhangs, and a short boot deck. The side window profile is a familiar sight from the current Elantra, YF Sonata, and the upcoming redesigned Elantra (MD), and side mirrors with turn signals add a touch of elegance.

With regards to the upcoming Accent's powertrain line-up, we have no information. The RB Accent will likely be released in early 2011 as a 2012 model. Stay tuned for more information and images as they become available to us. Remember you saw this here at TheCarBlogger first!

Hot News: Mazda Confirmed Tokyo Motor Show Plans

Mazda will launch its next-generation of engines and automatic transmissions at next month’s Tokyo motor show.

The Japanese firm will exhibit its Mazda SKY-G direct-injection petrol engine, its Mazda SKY-D clean diesel engine and the Mazda SKY Drive high-efficiency automatic transmission. It will also show off its Kiyora concept car in its home country for the first time.

The Mazda SKY-G is a direct-injection petrol engine with significantly improved fuel economy and power output due to enhanced thermal efficiency. It has been designed to reduce mechanical friction and achieve an optimal air-fuel mix, with fuel economy and torque improved by approximately 15 per cent compared to Mazda’s current 2.0-litre engine.

This equates to the fuel economy seen in a Mazda 2 to be achieved by a Mazda 3.

The Mazda SKY-D engine reduces mechanical friction to the level of a petrol engine. By employing piezo injectors, a two-stage turbocharger and other technologies, fuel economy becomes around 20 per cent better than the current 2.2-litre diesel engine. This equates to fuel economy of the Mazda 2 being achieved in the Mazda 6.

Mazda’s SKY-Drive automatic transmission offers improved feel and fuel consumption. It improves fuel economy by five per cent, due to a complete redesign that significantly reduces mechanical friction, a revised torque converter and clutch with minimised slip, and an optimised lock-up mechanism. These changes give it the feel of a dual-clutch transmission.

The Mazda Kiyora concept car was first seen at the Paris motor show last year and it will be seen for the first time in Japan next month. It runs on Mazda’s SKY-G engine mated to the SKY-Drive ‘box and can return around 90mpg. It achieves this by using lightweight materials, improved aerodynamics and Mazda’s i-stop stop/start system.

Spied: 2011 Peugeot 408

This is the new Peugeot 408, which has been caught testing in heavy disguise.

As previously revealed by Autocar, the replacement for the 407 will be more conservatively styled and less of a visual leap forward as its predecessor.

The car will be more evolutionary in its looks than the step from 406 to 407, said a company insider.

However, it is understood that the design will have eye-catching detailing and “hard-edged” looks that will help it stand out from other mid-sized saloons.

“The car will be an evolution, not revolution,” said the source. “For the overall effect, think Insignia.”

An all-new chassis features, which it will share with the new Citroen C5. Other technology which should make production is hydropneumatic suspension and adaptive headlamps.

The new 408 will feature a hybrid powertrain in the line-up, most likely with a diesel engine rather than petrol.

Peugeot is pioneering the diesel hybrid in cars like the 3008 and will extend the technology to its next generation of saloons.

A hybrid 408 should be capable of class-leading economy and CO2 of less than 100g/km. It is expected to be officially revealed later this year and will go on sale in the UK in 2010, with the hybrid following in 2011.

Unofficial Picture: 2013 Citroen C-Cactus

Stylish, affordable and econmical, the Citroen C-Cactus is a car for our times. And now these incredible leaked photos of the production-ready model prove that the French manufacturer is ready to turn concept into reality.

The concept's styling, first seen at the 2007 Frankfurt show, has evolved into a more subtle statement, but retains the rounded bonnet and hatchback bodystyle from the show car. Up front a pair of huge air intakes sit below Nissan 370Z-style boomerang headlights, while a pair of prominent creases run along the sides to the clean and uncluttered rear.

Rumours are rife that Citroen is planning to establish a new eco-brand to sit below its standard models, which in turn sit below the recently introduced DS premium range. Called 'Essentiale' the new sub-brand would focus on low-weight, simplicity of design and affordability - and the C-Cactus is mooted to be the first member of the Essentiale family when it goes on sale in 2012.

The philosophy of simplicity and ditching of superfluous equipment places the C-Cactus as a spiritual succesor to cut-price Citroens of the past such as the legendary 2CV and lesser-known Citroen Visa. If the 2007 concept is anything to go by, the entire dash structure could be ditched to cut weight and provide additional room in the cabin.

The interior might be purposefully low-tech, but under the bonnet a three-cylinder diesel engine mated to an electric motor should provide class-leading fuel economy, and mark the start of a new wave of cheap but reliable hybrids. For more details click here.

Hot News: Ferrari 458 Italia Spider Confirmed

Ferrari is opening up about its future plans! Prancing horse chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has confirmed that a convertible version of the already stunning 458 Italia is on the way.

The news doesn't come as a huge surprise, considering Spider versions of the 458's predecessors, the 360 Modena and F430 have proved extremely popular, but any news about a forthcoming Ferrari is guaranteed to cause a stir.

First deliveries of the fixed-roof 458 start in mid-January, while in di Montezemolo's own words "We also plan a spider version, but not for a couple of years."

Expect to pay a hefty premium over the standard car for an 'al fresco' 458 - and with prices starting at around £175,000 for the coupe, don't expect much change from £190,000 for the rag-top. For more details click here.

Hot News: Hyundai Pulled Out from Tokyo Motor Show 2009

It's the story of the incredible shrinking auto show. With less than a month to go before the doors open, one of the last major foreign automakers has pulled out of the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Hyundai called the show's organizers late last week to let them know it wouldn't be coming.

"Hyundai called last week and orally confirmed their intent to cancel," said Toyokazu Ishida, administrator of the international exhibition for show organizer the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. "It's unbelievable."

JAMA is still waiting for official, written confirmation of cancellation from Hyundai, and the company declined to comment on its plans. Though no official reason has been given for Hyundai's last-second departure, Japanese newspapers report that it was a money-saving decision. The company will lose the $122,000 it put down as a non-refundable deposit for 4,300 square feet of exhibit space, but won't have to pay for a display, staff, or other costs, which can run into the millions of dollars.

The South Korean automaker follows a slew of other non-Japanese marquees out the door and spells more trouble for the troubled show. Speculation about the end of the show ran rampant earlier this year when all three major U.S. automakers pulled out of the show along with several major European manufacturers. At the time, JAMA officials insisted that the show would go on, despite some internal disagreement about whether it was better to simply cancel the show than go forward with so few exhibitors. As of March, only half the number of exbitors as the 2007 show had signed up for 2009 and the number has fallen since then. The Tokyo Motor Show runs every other year, so a cancelation would leave a four-year gap between shows.

With Hyundai's withdrawal, the only remaining foreign makes are German tuner Alpina and British sports car-maker Lotus. Ishida said that JAMA hasn't decided how to fill Hyundai's floor space yet.

Spied: 2011 Citroen C4

Somewhere under the dense black camouflage is the next Citroen C4. At least, that's what our spy photographer tells us. The C4 was caught undergoing hot weather testing as it readies for a 2010 debut.

Of what is visible, these images guarantee that the next C4 will have a windshield, four wheels, and one A-pillar, at least. Look closer and you might be able to guess at the shape of the headlights. You can expect some cues from the recently upgraded C3 to translate, but the rest is up to your imagination.

Autocar, citing Citroen product head Vincent Besson, says powertrain options will consist of three-cylinder engines, but there is a chance of a gas-electric hybrid. In any event, we hear the C4 will debut at the Paris auto show in 2010.

Revealed: Hyundai EQUUS Limousine, 400 PS V8

Hyundai EQUUS LimousineHyundai Motor Company officially unveiled the long-wheelbase "Equus Limousine" in South Korea today. The redesigned Equus Limousine sits atop the regular-wheelbase Equus in the brand's domestic line-up, making it the flagship vehicle of the Korean automaker. The Limousine is 300 mm longer than the regular-wheelbase Equus, and introduces a myriad of technological innovations to the Korean automotive industry including an upgraded 400 ps (394 horsepower) 5.0L Tau V8 engine.

Hyundai boasts that the new Equus Limousine is longer than the car's primary rivals - Mercedes-Benz S500L, Lexus LS460L, and BMW 750Li. The automaker claims to have achieved this by not only stretching the B-pillar, but also lengthening the rear passenger doors in order to facilitate ingress and egress. The Equus Limousine also bests its main competitors in rear legroom by as much as 376 mm.

One of the main highlights of the Equus Limousine is the upgraded 5.0L Tau V8 engine that produces 400 ps and 51.0㎏.m of torque (369 lb.ft). The new engine is based on Hyundai's Tau 4.6L V8 which landed in the list of Ward's 10 Best Engines. Hyundai's 5.0L V8 beats the powerplants of the Lexus LS460L (380 horsepower) and Mercedes-Benz S500L (382 horsepower), but lags slightly behind that of the BMW 750Li (407 horsepower). The Equus Limousine is also available with a 290 horsepower 3.8L Lambda V6.

To differentiate the Limousine from the regular-wheelbase model, the stretch version features an exclusive horizontal cross-bar radiator grille with the EQUUS emblem in the center. It is also Hyundai's first production car to be standard with Adaptive LED headlamps. The Limousine also packs many luxury amenities such as powered footrest, Rear Seat Leg Support, Relax Posture Control and Massage System function.

The price for the long wheelbase edition EQUUS ranges from 135 million won to 146 million won (approximately US$113,000 to US$122,180, based on today's currency exchange rates). Hyundai has released no word on its potential arrival into the States, though we highly doubt the automaker will make such a daring attempt.

Frankfurt: Kia Shows Revised Cee'd Hybrid With New Face

KIA cee'd hybridKia Motors unveiled the revised hybrid-electric variant of the popular cee'd Hatchback in Frankfurt last week. Developed at Kia’s European R&D centre, the cee’d hybrid concept is a follow-up model of the initial cee’d hybrid model, which debuted at the Paris Auto Show last year. Since then, the new cee’d hybrid has adopted the new front fascia and received upgraded powertrain technology.

The Kia cee’d hybrid concept car shown in Frankfurt is powered by a 1.6L Gamma inline-4 engine that is paired with a 20 horsepower electric motor. The high-torque electric motor has a maximum torque of 105 Nm from just 1500 rpm. It is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) developed by Kia. The hybrid-electric powertrain is similar in set up to the Forte LPI Hybrid's, but the cee'd hybrid propels on gasoline rather than liquified petroleum gas (LPG).

According to Kia, new cee’d hybrid reaches a top speed of 185 km/h and accelerates from 0-to-100 kmh in just 11.8 seconds. CO2 emissions of the hybrid model have been lowered by 25 percent from that of the standard cee'd to only 96 grams per kilometer.

2011 KIA Sorento
Kia Motors continues its full-fledged design and vehicle lineup transformation with the all-new 2011 Sorento CUV. The first vehicle to roll off the line at Kia Motors’ new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia, the new Sorento adopts Kia signature design cues and offers the U.S. market a well-equipped, well-appointed and versatile offering for the looming CUV market. The redesigned Sorento is set to hit showrooms in January 2010.

The completely redesigned Sorento is a landmark departure in design compared to its predecessor. The new Sorento is larger in every dimension including increased head and legroom and nearly five cubic feet more in cargo capacity. For the first time on any Kia vehicle, a panoramic sunroof is in the options list of the new Sorento.

New Car: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander

The big story for the 2010 Outlander is the thoroughly “next generation” styling, inspired by the outstanding Mitsubishi Outlander GT Prototype displayed at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. The front grille design is taken from the Lancer Evolution’s “jet fighter” look and is complemented by contemporary design elements, such as a reshaped front bumper, side mirrors, fenders and bonnet. Reshaped headlamps, a new rear bumper and side sills complete the slick sports styling.

Complementing the exterior changes, the Outlander interior design has been freshened with the addition of new seat, door and dash trims, grained leather to premium models, double-stitching, chrome accents and a brilliant new instrument cluster. Additional Lancer-Evolution-inspired design cues include available aluminium racing style pedals and a sport-type steering wheel.

Technological upgrades for the new Outlander include the addition of Mitsubishi’s acclaimed Super-All Wheel Control system (S-AWC) to V6 models, improvements to power delivery and fuel economy, the addition of Hill Start Control (HAC) for all CVT and automatic models and USB inputs for audio (where Mitsubishi’s Multi Communication System or MMCS is not fitted).

Merging Mitsubishi’s experience in off-road and rally racing with production car development, the V6 Outlander features the revolutionary Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. Beyond simple four-wheel drive, S-AWC is a comprehensive system that improves handling, traction and stability. Using a first-in-class active front limited-slip differential and an electronically controlled four-wheel drive coupling, S-AWC can prevent wheel slip between front to rear and side-to-side, providing greater traction through all types of terrain and inclement weather, including ice, snow and rain.

The 2010 model year Outlander continues with two tried and trusted engine choices. First, the 2.4-litre DOHC 16 valve MPI MIVEC engine provides peppy, yet frugal motoring for drivers with a keen eye for economy and generates 125 kW of power @ 6,000 rpm and 226 NM of torque @4,100rpm. The 2.4-litre engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission or an optional continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with Sports Mode sequential style shift changes and INVECS Smart Logic.

Drivers with a need for speed will choose the powerful V6 3.0-litre SOHC 24 valve MPI MIVEC engine which generates 169 KW of power @ 6,250 rpm and 291 Nm of torque @ 3,750 rpm. The V6 benefits from improvements to the all-aluminium engine, including a reduction in intake restriction plus optimised camshaft timing and compression ratio. These changes raise the maximum output by a modest 7 kW, but, importantly, also contribute to an improved torque curve for more responsive city driving and improved fuel economy and emissions.
