The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made history today when they announced results of their first crah testings of convertibles. Out of the 10 new drop-tops they tested, the Saab 9-3 Convertible and the Volvo C70 received the Top Safety Pick. They scored "good" for all three criterias: frontal, side, and rear.
The rear impact tests proved to be the most difficult for these cars as fixed roofs can do a great deal in protecting the cabin and the car itself. The Pontiac G6 Convertible did not do so well in every criteria. Some other vehicles tested were the Chrysler Sebring Convertible, BMW 3-Series Convertible, Mitsubishi Eclipse Convertible, and the Audi A4 Cabriolet. PRESS RELEASE:
1st time Institute tests convertibles: Saab & Volvo models are top performers; 3 are marginal in side impact test
ARLINGTON, VA - The Saab 9-3 and Volvo C70 earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's TOP SAFETY PICK award for superior crash protection in the first tests the Institute has conducted of 10 midsize convertible models. The Saab and Volvo earn the top rating of good for protection in front, side, and rear crashes, and both models include standard electronic stability control (ESC), which research shows can help drivers avoid crashes. The lowest rated convertible model overall is the Pontiac G6. It's acceptable for frontal crash protection but only marginal for protection in side and rear impacts. While the Audi A4 and BMW 3 series earn good ratings in frontal offset tests, both are rated marginal for side impact protection and poor for protection in rear crashes.
The TOP SAFETY PICK designation is intended to make it easier for consumers to find top-rated vehicles without sorting through reams of crash test results. To earn this award, a vehicle must have good ratings in all 3 Institute crash tests. It also must have ESC. The Institute adds a requirement for convertibles which must be equipped with rollbars designed to preserve occupants' headroom if a convertible rolls over. Both the 9-3 and C70 are equipped with standard pop-up rollbars behind the rear head restraints that deploy if sensors detect a serious crash.
"The performances of the 9-3 and C70 are impressive," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "These cars combine what convertible buyers should look for if they're shopping with safety in mind. The Saab and Volvo not only provide good protection in high-speed front and side crashes but also have good seat and head restraint designs for protecting against whiplash in rear crashes."
"We wanted to test convertibles because sales are increasing," Lund says. "We also wanted to evaluate a group of vehicles that automakers wouldn't expect us to test to see if crashworthiness improvements in mainstream cars also are being built into convertibles. For the most part we found that this is happening."
Five models earn the highest rating of good for front and side crash protection. Seven of the 10 convertibles have standard side airbags designed to protect the heads of occupants in the front seats, and 8 have ESC as standard or optional equipment.
Absence of roof is inherent disadvantage: High-speed crashes are violent events, and the roof of a hardtop helps to keep people's heads and arms from flailing outside the vehicle. Roofs also provide protection if a vehicle rolls over. Data from real-world crashes indicate that the overall risk of death isn't higher in a convertible, but this doesn't mean there aren't any safety disadvantages.
The absence of a roof makes it a challenge to design a convertible for safety. The roof helps to maintain the rigidity of the structure around the occupant compartment and keep the compartment intact in a serious crash. The main structures of convertibles have to be strengthened to compensate for the support that's lost in removing the roof. The Institute's crash test results show that many modern convertibles compensate well. For example, the 9-3 convertible achieves the same good front, side, and rear crash test ratings as the 4-door sedan version.
Big price tag doesn't ensure a safer car: While the 2 TOP SAFETY PICK winners are relatively expensive, price doesn't necessarily predict good crash test ratings. Two of the least expensive models among the 10 the Institute tested are the Chrysler Sebring and Mitsubishi Eclipse, both of which recently were redesigned and earn good ratings in front and side crash tests.
"You could spend twice as much for an Audi A4 convertible, which is an older design based on the previous A4 sedan, but it's rated marginal in our side test," Lund says. Based on the Volkswagen Eos's performance, the Institute expects a redesigned A4 to perform better when it's released. VW and Audi are owned by the same parent company.
To reduce the risk if a convertible rolls over, it's important to have rollbars, which may be either fixed in place or deploy automatically if sensors detect the possibility of a rollover. Pop-up rollbars are standard on the 9-3, C70, Eos, 3 series, and A4 but unavailable on any of the domestic or Asian brands the Institute tested.
"It makes sense that a rollbar would help preserve some headroom, just as we hope a fixed roof would," Lund says. "But rollbars aren't the same as having a fixed roof. We don't yet know if convertibles with the bars have lower rollover death rates than convertibles without them.
Another innovation on some new convertibles is that the vinyl or cloth top is replaced by a multipiece hardtop that folds into the trunk. It's standard on the C70, Eos, 3 series, and G6. It's optional on the Chrysler Sebring. Folding hardtops aren't as rigid as fixed roofs so they wouldn't be expected to make a convertible more crashworthy than if the top were soft. Foldtops are for comfort, not safety.
"Of course, without a top all bets are off if you're not using a safety belt. Good test results don't mean convertibles are as protective as comparable hardtop cars," Lund points out.
Problems found in frontal tests: The structure of the Pontiac G6's occupant compartment held up well during the frontal test, but there was a problem with the driver seat. It came loose on one of its tracks and moved forward 4 inches on the left side. The dummy's head slid around the left side of the airbag and hit the instrument panel.
"We've rarely seen a dummy's head hit the instrument panel in our frontal test," Lund says. Overall the G6 is rated acceptable for frontal protection.
"Seats shouldn't come loose in crashes, so we can't rate the G6 good," Lund adds. Measures recorded on the dummy's head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of serious injury in these areas of the body, but the poorly controlled movement of the dummy during the impact may have contributed to high forces on its right leg.
The Institute conducted 2 frontal tests of the Mustang. In the first test, the driver door partially opened late in the crash. Even though this didn't significantly affect the driver dummy's movement during the impact, doors shouldn't open because in some crashes this could lead to partial or complete ejection of occupants.
Ford engineers found that the window glass in the down position pushed on the door latch during the crash. Structure was added in the door to prevent the glass from contacting the latch mechanism, and then the engineers asked the Institute to test the Mustang again. In the second test with the change, the door remained closed.
The Mustang is rated acceptable instead of good overall because the structure isn't good, and the dummy's head bottomed out the airbag. The resulting head acceleration was high. The head was struck by the windshield pillar.
Side impact protection is marginal in 3 cars: The Institute's side test represents what happens when the striking vehicle is a pickup or SUV. The BMW 3 series and Audi A4 equipped with standard side airbags and the G6 with side airbags as optional equipment earn the second lowest rating for side impact protection.
"The 3 series and Pontiac G6 are especially disappointing because they're new models," Lund says. "Other auto manufacturers have figured out how to provide good side impact protection for occupants of convertibles."
The G6 is equipped with optional side airbags designed to protect the torsos but not the heads of front-seat occupants. In the side test, the driver dummy's head struck the windowsill. This caused a high head acceleration. In a real-world crash of similar severity, a serious skull fracture and brain injuries would be possible. A taller person's head also might be struck by the hood of an oncoming SUV or pickup.
The 3 series is equipped with standard side airbags designed to protect front-seat occupants' heads as well as their torsos. However, injury measures recorded on the driver dummy indicate the possibility of rib fractures and internal organ injuries in real-world crashes of similar severity.
"None of the 10 convertibles provides side airbag protection for people riding in back seats. We didn't record high injury forces on any of the dummies in the back seats, but in a crash at a different speed or configuration the heads of back-seat passengers would be at risk without side airbags," Lund notes.
Rear crash protection is mostly poor: Significant differences also were apparent among the convertibles in the protection they afford in rear crashes. Only the Volvo and Saab are equipped with seat/head restraint designs that provide good protection against whiplash injury. The other 8 models are rated marginal or poor for rear crash protection.
"It isn't hard or expensive to design a seat to prevent neck injury in a rear-end crash," Lund says. "Some of these manufacturers like Audi, Ford, and Volkswagen already have seat designs elsewhere in their lines of vehicles that are rated good for whiplash prevention, but these automakers haven't put the good seat/head restraints in their convertibles."
How vehicles are evaluated: The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.
Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on 2 instrumented SID-IIs dummies, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact. Injury measures obtained from the 2 dummies, one in the driver seat and the other in the back seat behind the driver, are used to determine the likelihood that a driver and/or passenger in a similar real-world crash would sustain serious injury to various parts of the body. The movements and contacts of the dummies' heads during the test also are evaluated. Structural performance is based on measurements indicating the amount of B-pillar intrusion into the occupant compartment.
Rear crash protection is rated according to a 2-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry - the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man. Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they cannot be positioned to protect many people.
Nissan mulls Altima Convertible
Nissan may add a drop-top variant of the Altima in the years to come. If the project is given the go-ahead, the drop-top will be based on the Altima Coupe. The Altima Coupe is based on the Altima Sedan, but only shares an interior and hood. The low-priced convertible segment isn't what we call "successful" these days as sales are slow, mainly because of the lack of new models in the segment.
Main rivals of the Altima Convertible would include the Toyota Solara Convertible, Chrysler Sebring Convertible and the Pontiac G6 Convertible.

Chevrolet Lambda crossover likely to launch as early as next year
Is anyone surprised that the TrailBlazer is still part of the Chevrolet line-up for this year? We are, as the car has dwindled quickly and most of its siblings have already departed. The Detroit News is reporting that the TrailBlazer will be canned by 2010 and a new crossover will replace the old-timer as early as next year.
The new Chevrolet crossover will sit on GM's successful Lambda platform which underpins the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia (pictured) and the Buick Enclave. All three of the crossovers are doing exceedingly well and Buick has had waiting lists on its Enclave, something that was hardly noticed in Buick dealerships for a long time. The crossovers accounted for 4% of GM's overall sales last month. Motor Authority is reporting that the new bow-tie crossover will be named the Traverse.
The new crossover will be assembled in GM's Spring Hill, Tennessee plant.

Spied: 2009 Chevrolet Nubira
The third generation Nubira has been caught testing at the Nurburgring recently. The prototype shows an all-new design with a rounder roofline. The C-pillar cues the Chrysler Sebring and the new design is more European than its predecessor. It is also designed under GM unlike its predecessor which was designed by Pininfarina. Headlights that cue the Epica mid-size sedan can be visible under the tapes. From what we can see, it also appears to have 4-wheel disc brakes. Sources say that GM will drop the Lacetti name in 2009 and rename all variants to Nubira. Head on over to WorldCarFans to view more shots.

Buick to revive Skylark nameplate in China
The Skylark had its days in the 80's and 90's. The impression that remained of the Skylark was certainly not positive. However, GM did not market the Skylark outside of the US. So the nameplate will be revived in China for the successor of their Excelle compact sedan, based on the Daewoo Lacetti. The Skylark will sit on GM's new Delta II platform, which will underpin the next Cobalt, G6 and Saturn Astra.
The Skylark will be engineered and built in GM's Chinese facilities and it may be one of the first vehicles from GM China destined for the US. While we have little or no idea on how it will shape up, we can predict that it will be widely received in the US. The Park Avenue, based on the Holden WM Statesman, had a distinct interior designed in China and we still hear pleads from GM enthusiasts to bring it over to the US. While GM already had three compact cars in the pipeline, it wouldn't hurt for a fourth one. But the real question is: Are Americans ready for a compact Buick? We'll wait and see how GM plays the deck with this one.

Porsche's mini-Cayenne rumored to be named Roxster
Porsche is rumored to be working on a sub-Cayenne model according to Autobild. Like the Cayenne which shares underpinnings with the Audi Q7, the new vehicle, rumored to be named the Roxster, will share underpinnings with the upcoming Audi Q5. They are reporting that Porsche AG has already trademarked the name. In exchange for the Q5, the source reports that Porsche will share technologies of its next generation Cayman and Boxster with Audi for a new roadster rumored to be called the R4.
The Roxster will be different from its Cayenne in performance as Porsche will focus more into superior handling and dynamics. There had been inquiries put in by Porsche for another model to accompany the Panamera in its new production facility, and it's very likely the Roxster is the top candidate.

Box On Wheels: Nissan planning to bring three subcompact cars to US, including Cube
Japanese media reports that Nissan is planning to throw in more subcompact cars in the North American market as early as next year. Alongside the Versa will be the next-generation Cube and two other subcompact cars. Nikkei is reporting that one model could be priced below $10K, which will indefinitely trigger a price war here in the US.
GM unveiled the Spark last year, which is roughly priced around $7300USD, in India. GM also has the three mini-car concepts ready, so they should have no problem. The Cube will compete alongside the Scion xB in the fierce subcompact market and Nissan comes at a right time as fuel prices are rising and fuel economy is being taken very seriously in purchasing a car now.

Bloomberg: All NYC cabs to be hybrids by 2012
That's right. Michael Bloomberg, the current mayor of New York City, announced plans of replacing the current taxi fleet of 13,000 into hybrids by 2012. The plan takes effective immediately as the current hybrid cab fleet of 400 will be increased to 1000 by October of 2008. The current hybrid fleet consists of mostly the Ford Escape Hybrid, Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the Saturn Vue Green Line.
The plan also announced that by October 2008, all taxi cabs would have to have minimum fuel consumption of 25mpg. By 2009, it will be increased to 30mpg. The popular Ford Crown Victoria taxi cab only gets 15mpg by the 2008 EPA standards, whereas the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid serves up 34mpg. Since all taxi cabs in NYC will suffer major traffic congestion and slow cruising speeds, emissions would drastically decrease and mileage will increase. The reason being that a hybrid motor stays all-electric in low speeds, something which NYC cabs will face commonly.

Ford introduces new Harley F-150 with optional 450hp V8
Ford and Harley-Davidson do a great deal in business co-operatively and one great example is the Harley-Davidson Ford F-150. Based on the F-150 SuperCrew 4x2, last year's model churned out 300hp, powered by the 5.4L Triton V8. Until then, 300hp was enough to get us all crazy, especially for a pickup. However, with the recent debuts of many sub-$30K vehicles that easily exceed 300hp, the Harley was overshadowed. The 2007 model adds an optional 450hp V8, brought to you by SALEEN. This supercharger is also found in the Shelby GT500.
Ford also revamped minor details such as the grille and badging. The Harley now sports a 6-bar chrome grille coupled with some Harley-Davidson badges here and there. The 300hp V8 is the standard powertrain while the SALEEN supercharger is a $6500 option. The Harley F-150 will have a base price of $37,210 in addition to a $925 destination charge.

Super Pocket Rocket: Volkswagen unveils GTI Pirelli
VW unveiled the Pirelli version of the GTI hatchback at the Wörthersee 2007. 25 years ago, in May of 1983, VW unveiled their first Pirelli version of the GTI and this one continues the tradition that went black. Along with the 650hp super-GTI and the quirky, but attractive Audi Clubsport quattro Concept, the GTI Pirelli made its debut in the most unexpected place. The Pirelli version is based on the GTI Edition 30, which the engine is tweaked to pump 30 more horsepowers, delivering 230hp as a result. It boasts a top speed of 245km/h (152mph) and a 0-100km/h (62mph) time of 6.8 sec (manual gearbox).
The minor visual features include: the Edition 30 bodykit, 18" Pirelli wheels coupled to Pirelli P-Zero tires, some Pirelli badges here and there, and special seats with tire tread design fabrics. The Pirelli GTI will be available in four colors: bright yellow, black pearl, silver, and blue graphite. It will go on sale in September.

PRESS RELEASE: The New Golf GTI Pirelli - Comeback of the GTI Pirelli
The Golf GTI Pirelli is back; a powerful, fast and very exclusive GTI. Volkswagen is continuing the history of one of the best known limited edition models in Europe. In May 1983, the "Original Pirelli" arrived on the market. It was based on the first generation, second series Golf GTI. A distinctive identifying feature: Specially designed alloy wheels with the "Pirelli P" on their outer edges. A remarkable 10,500 cars of the special model were built and sold within half a year. Then it was over - a limited edition! If there were an Automobile Hall of Fame for young-timers, the "Pirelli GTI", as it was called by its fans, would have long held a place there.
The legendary tire tracks of the young-timer are now being extended by the new Golf GTI Pirelli. And indeed with completely new Pirelli high-performance tires too. They are wrapped around powerful 18-inch Pirelli wheels in Titanium look. The car's interior has been upgraded with a partial-leather sports seat system that has an embedded tire tread pattern. Instead of the previous 112 PS the new car converts 230 PS into forward propulsion. If needed, a 245 km/h top speed is within the car's capabilities. In 6.8 seconds the Turbo-FSI propels the GTI Pirelli to 100 km/h from a standstill.
The Golf GTI Pirelli, conceptualized by Volkswagen Individual, will be presented in a worldwide debut between May 16 and 20. The occasion and site of this premiere are a perfect fit: The international GTI Meeting at Wörthersee, Austria. Production will begin in September.
Driving performance of the Golf GTI Pirelli.
A look at the numbers gives it away: 169 kW / 230 PS - those are the same performance values as the engine in the Golf GTI Edition 30 that arrived on the market in 2006 on the occasion of the GTI's monumental birthday. The 200 PS of the "normal" GTI were boosted by one PS for each year since 1976. Now this "jubilee engine" is also powering the Golf GTI Pirelli. The sports car races to the 100 km/h mark in just 6.8 seconds. But it can go even faster: When the GTI Pirelli is ordered with the optional DSG dual clutch transmission, the most powerful GTI of all times breaks through the magic "sound barrier" in 6.6 seconds. The GTI philosophy of agility is accompanied by the efficiency with which this Turbo-FSI goes to work: 8.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, or 7.9 liters with DSG, are evidence of the virtuosity with which Volkswagen masters the keyboard of engine building.
Tires and wheels of the Golf GTI Pirelli.
"Power is nothing without control", says Pirelli. Volkswagen sees it this way too. Chassis, brakes and ESP combine for a well-balanced safety package that can even perform masterfully on the North Loop of the Nuremburg Ring track. But things do not really get rounded out until the tires come into play. That is why Pirelli is contributing a new high-performance tire to the project: The latest generation of P-Zero tires. The material mixture and tread pattern of the 225/40 P-Zero were designed to benefit handling, braking, ride comfort and aquaplaning properties.
As in 1983, the tires are wrapped around Pirelli alloy wheels. They are coated with a Titanium-colored paint. The manufacturer interprets the visual effect of the five spokes as an homage to the wheels of the first Pirelli GTI. They had openings in the form of a P for Pirelli on their outer edges. This P is also found in the new wheel design - but in this case it is reflected: In the rim flange. However, there are worlds of difference between the dimensions of the two types of alloy wheels: They are 7.5x18 inch today, but were 6x14 inch back then.
Body of the Golf GTI Pirelli.
Bumpers and side skirts painted entirely in car color visually set the Golf GTI Pirelli apart from the 200-PS GTI. Recall that on this classic GTI, introduced at the end of 2004, the spoiler in front, the lower bumper section in the rear, and the skirt between the wheel housings on the sides were in black.
Similar to the GTI Edition 30, a plate with the Pirelli signature on the right side of the tailgate is a reference to this exclusive Golf GTI. In its side profile, the new car has standard tinted rear windows and another Pirelli signature can be seen here on the C-pillar of each side. Designers coordinated the color of the signature to the body paint color. Four of these are offered on the Golf GTI Pirelli. If "Blue graphite" or "Black magic pearl" is selected, the Pirelli signature is in silver. If the GTI - available as a two-door or four-door - is ordered in "Sunflower" or "Reflex silver", there is a black signature. "Sunflower" - a bright yellow - was created especially for this GTI. So if you look in your rearview mirror this coming fall and see something yellow with a black radiator grille growing larger very quickly, it can only be one thing: The Golf GTI Pirelli.
Interior of the Golf GTI Pirelli.
Just as distinctively as on the GTI Edition 30, the GTI Pirelli stands out from the rest of the model series with its refined interior. Take the example of the sports seating system: The standard GTI seats developed by Volkswagen Individual were upgraded to perfectly customize them for the GTI Pirelli: The anthracite colored lateral supports, seatbacks, head restraints and center armrests are upholstered in leather ("Vienna" type); yellow decorative seams provide a fine visual contrast. But the real highlight is the center seat panels. They are not made of the usual GTI "Interlagos" diamond pattern, rather of a breathable and very luxurious microfiber from the Italian producer Miko ("Dinamica" type): The tire tread pattern is embedded in the microfibers, which also sport the anthracite color. There is yet another accent in the front head restraints. Where the "GTI" letters are usually found, in this car the lettering is "Pirelli" throughout.
"Pirelli" equipment features also include heated seats, electrically adjustable lumbar supports in front, and all-leather center armrest in the rear. Under its counterpart in front, there is a storage bin that may be used optionally to house a CD-changer or MP3 player.
The leather sports steering wheel and parking brake grip have been retooled to match the top sports seats: They also have decorative yellow seams. In addition, the steering wheel with ergonomic hand recesses and perforated leather here support a sporty driving style. The vertical spoke of the steering wheel has a metallic Pirelli emblem as an accent.
Engine of the Golf GTI Pirelli.
It was 25 years ago when Volkswagen first introduced the era of downsizing on its first turbo-diesel. Of course, the Turbo-FSI on the GTI is technically unrelated to a turbo-diesel, but they have the principle of downsizing in common - in both cases engine displacement is replaced by engine charging. Approximately one decade after the first turbo-diesel, the direct-injection TDI followed. This engine extended the principle of downsizing to include the aspect of direct injection. This mix of technologies yielded lower fuel consumption and emissions, and more torque and power. On the Golf GTI, Volkswagen has transferred its 2004 downsizing concept to a powerful gasoline engine for the first time; its use of a turbocharger with intercooler plus direct injection brings fuel economy and sportiness in greater harmony than ever. The proof of this is measurable: The 147 kW / 200 PS and 280 Newton-meter strong Turbo-FSI of the "normal" GTI attains a top speed of 235 km/h and takes 7.2 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h. Average fuel consumption: Exceptionally low for a sports car at 8.0 liters per 100 kilometers. If the GTI is shifted by DSG, fuel consumption is reduced to 7.9 liters.
The Golf GTI Pirelli is proof today of the potential in combining gasoline direct injection and charging. Its turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine is currently the most powerful four cylinder engine from Volkswagen. This front-mounted transverse engine is shifted by a standard manual six-speed gearbox. The 16-valve four cylinder with 1,984 cm3 displacement outputs its maximum power of 169 kW / 230 PS at 5,500 rpm. Its maximum torque of 300 Newton-meters is available over a large speed window - from 2,200 to 5,200 rpm. Nothing is more befitting a sports car than this sort of torque characteristic.
And the efficiency of the charged VW direct injection gasoline engine is measurable here too. In spite of an extra 30 PS, 20 Newton-meters and 10 km/h top speed, compared to the 200-PS version the manually shifted Golf GTI Pirelli consumes just 0.2 liters more fuel per 100 kilometers. When shifted by a DSG dual clutch transmission, its fuel consumption is even identical at 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers!

PRESS RELEASE: NEW SEAT ALTEA FREETRACK: The family adventurer
-The Spanish car maker’s first all-road car
-Four-wheel drive, 200 hp petrol and 170 hp diesel engines
-Rear seat multimedia system fitted as standard
At the upcoming Barcelona Motor Show from 7 to 17 June, SEAT will be presenting its first all-road vehicle – the Altea freetrack. After unveiling the prototype version in Geneva, which hinted at the new model’s silhouette, the definitive version can be seen in Barcelona and goes on sale this summer.
With this model, SEAT is making its debut in the SUV segment, an area of the market which has grown considerably in recent years. The new Altea freetrack is one of the few compact monospace cars on the market featuring clear off-road styling, as well as engines that deliver up to 200 hp. This factor proves the dynamic character of SEAT’s new all-road model, whose slogan “auto emoción” works just as well on- as well as off-road.
Exclusive off-road looks
Based on the Altea XL, the visual enhancements on the new freetrack include protective moulding below the waistline, as well as the specific plastic front and rear bumpers. These elements lend a rugged and robust image to the new model while also protecting the body when driving off-road.
The exterior stands out with new, exclusive design 17-inch wheels and larger diameter tyres. The Altea freetrack also has 40 mm more ground clearance than the Altea XL, making it easier for the new model to tackle any kind of terrain.
Top level performance
The Altea freetrack is available with four-wheel drive via a Haldex-type arrangement with a hydro-mechanical connection and electronic control, to ensure that the tractive force is distributed permanently in a progressive and precise manner. Under normal use, power is fully transferred to the front wheels, with up to 50% being distributed to the rear wheels when the need arises.
One of the most outstanding features of the new Altea freetrack is its engine range, with performance levels that make the new SEAT model the market’s most dynamic family-sized SUV. A 200 hp 2.0 TFSI petrol and a 170 hp 2.0 TDI diesel engine are responsible for taking the Altea freetrack over all types of terrain.
The 2.0 TFSI engine enables the newcomer to reach a top speed of 214 km/h, with 0 to 100 km/h taking just 7.5 seconds – yet it can still average fuel consumption of 9.4 litres. On the other hand, the freetrack 2.0 TDI reaches a top speed of 204 km/h, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and consumes an average of 6.8 litres for every 100 km of driving.
Besides these performance figures, the new Altea freetrack matches the Altea XL in terms of impressive interior space and generous load capacity. With its 593 litre boot, the freetrack can carry everything needed for the entire family’s hobbies and leisure activities.
The rear seats are exceptionally roomy and flexible, as they can slide back by up to 16 centimetres for added legroom while still allowing more than enough boot space.
Multimedia system as standard
The Altea freetrack will be sold with just one trim level featuring a complete set of standard equipment.
The most outstanding feature is a new multimedia system, which comprises a 7-inch TFT screen hinged on the ceiling and an RCA connection that allows connection to a DVD player, videogames, laptops and even MP3 players. This way the sound is transmitted over the car’s own sound system.
The Altea freetrack also features new rear window shades as standard, that are hidden inside the doors when not in use, leaving the view unobstructed for rear seat passengers.
Further standard-fit elements on the Altea freetrack include dual climatise control, rain sensor wipers, light sensor, parking sensors, cruise control, trip computer, plus CD MP3 radio and steering wheel mounted controls, among others. Safety highlights include standard ESP (Electronic Stability Control), six airbags, EPS electro-mechanical steering and tyre pressure warning.
Designed, developed and manufactured in Spain
The new Altea freetrack has been wholly designed and developed at the SEAT Technical Centre in Martorell, where over 1,000 highly qualified staff work daily to develop new models.
It will be exclusively made at the SEAT facilities in Martorell, one of Europe’s most modern and most flexible automotive factories, where the Ibiza, Córdoba, Altea, Altea XL, Toledo and León models are also produced.
The Freetrack will incorporate VW's four-wheel drive chassis, which transfers power to the front wheels under civilized driving, and up to 50% power onto the rear wheels when needed. Spied: 2008 Honda Accord EX Sedan caught testing
Temple of VTEC just posted up three spyshots of the EX trim of the new Accord Sedan, due to be unveiled on August 21st. Last week, the first spyshots of the Accord Sedan surfaced on the web, showing the LX variant. Reception was love-it-or-hate-it and we were on the tip of the cliff on whether we liked it or not. These new shots improve our perspective of the Accord drastically, especially with the bigger wheels.
The Honda Accord Coupe and Sedan will be unveiled on August 21st, according to Motor Trend, who told us to give a close watch on their website on that day. However, a September 1st debut might be more likely, as it follows Honda's previous annual September 1st releases, like the CR-V in 2006, Civic in 2005, and Odyssey in 2004. Head on over to VTEC to see these images fully.

Audi Clubsport quattro Speedster Concept revealed
This reveal was quite unexpected, as we came across upon this today. Audi released images of its Clubsport quattro Speedster Concept, which is basically an Audi TT Roadster with no pillars. The Speedster consists of no top, A-pillar, or rearview mirrors. Instead, a small windshield and side mirrors with turn signals do the job. It also features an enormous grille, which is prominent in Audi's recent concepts such as the Cross Coupe quattro Concept, revealed in Shanghai.
The Speedster is powered by a gussied up variant of the 2.0L TFSI engine, pumping out 300hp. Coupled to Audi's S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission, its brakes have been also modeified to carbon ceramic units. It runs on 20" lightweight alloys to maximize its advantage of the light weight.
Audi has revealed no more information than what we wrote above via Autobild. The Speedster will NOT debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show as you might have expected while reading the article. In fact, Audi will unveil the Speedster Concept at Wörtherseetreffen 2007, a tuning show for VW GTIs, in Germany.

GM really knows how to excite car enthusiasts like us. The General released new images of the Camaro Convertible Concept and the Beat Concept, but this time, with some life into it. The cars were fine, but the initial shots they gave us at launch was lifeless with the dull gray studio backgrounds. They even managed to sneak in a beautiful human this time, coupled with the beautiful setting.
These shots came at an unexpected time (last weekend according to Jalopnik), but they are good enough to heat up our already boiling anticipations on both of these cars. Enough talking, we'll leave you in front of your PC with the glory shots yourself.

Rumors emerge of the fate of the Cadillac DTS and STS
It seems to be a growing trend these days where the American automakers are experiencing their worst, whereas the imports are doing abundantly well. Motor Authority is reporting that Cadillac might be the next victim in this streak with the STS and DTS sedans. The front-wheel drive DTS is predicted to be the first one planned to go, despite being one of the brand's top sellers.
Automotive News is reporting that Cadillac might be downsizing their future cars, and focus more around the CTS. The STS might also be sent off to death row, in place of a long-wheelbase CTS. Coupe, convertible, and estate versions will likely be in the pipeline as Cadillac is focusing more into a diverse line-up, while keeping smooth production and development strategies.

2008 Suzuki Splash revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut
Following our last post on the revealing of the Agila, Suzuki released new images of its Splash minicar, which will debut alongside the Agila in Frankfurt. The new Splash is based on the Swift platform, and it cues the Splash Concept. The Agila and Splash differ little in design. Just like the Agila, the Splash grows in every dimension from its Wagon R+ predecessor. Engine choices will be the same as the Agila at launch, and it is expected to go on sale at the same time as the Agila, next spring.
