An In-depth Look at New-for-2008 Imports in S.Korea

Just about half a decade ago, imported cars were reserved for the wealthy with only a few importers in business in those days. Nowadays, the society has completely revolutionized in South Korea with import cars coming and selling at the masses. For 2008, foreign automakers are preparing for new model launches and also a couple of brand introductions as well. Mitsubishi and Nissan are stepping on South Korean grounds for the first time for 2008.

Chrysler Korea is introducing a slew of new models including the 300C and the redesigned Grand Voyager (Town & Country in North America). Jeep is introducing the facelifted Grand Cherokee and the SRT-8 variant. Over at the Ford department, the redesigned Mondeo and the S-MAX are being brought over from Europe. We, North Americans, stil don't get those models. GM Korea is bringing in the redesigned Cadillac CTS. Volkswagen is introducing the all-new Tiguan and 9 BlueMotion models.

MINI is introducing the Clubman, which will only add to the success the diminutive automaker is facing with the Cooper. Honda of Korea, who is also facing massive success with the CR-V, is preparing to introduce the redesigned Accord. Stepping South Korean grounds for the first time, Nissan is planning to commence the brand with the Rogue, Altima and the Murano. Also all-new for 2008, Mitsubishi is hoping to launch the brand on the right track with the Lancer 1.5, Galant 2.0., Pajero, and the adorable 'i'.

Frankfurt: Peugeot Flux Concept

Last March, the Geneva International Motor Show was host to Peugeot's 4th annual design competition. Out of over 4000 entries, the Flux was chosen. Penned by Mihai Panaitescu, the Flux, once a scaled clay model, was built to scale for unveiling at Frankfurt next month.

The task of the design competition was factored around the P.L.E.A.S.E. acronym which stood for pleasure, lightweight, efficiency, accessibility, simplicity and ecology. Peugeot decided Mr. Panaitescu's iteration met all the standards. The Flux Concept will also be included in the XBOX 360's Project Gotham Racing 4. PRESS RELEASE: PEUGEOT FLUX CONCEPT

After the Flux car design project was awarded winner of the 4th edition of Peugeot's Design Contest, the team at Peugeot's Style Center began creating a full scale model of the winning project, in close relationship with its author, Mihaï Panaîtescu.

In addition, the project is in the process of being crafted virtually for inclusion in "Project Gotham Racing 4," the racing game developed by Bizarre Creations exclusively for Microsoft®'s Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system.

The Flux project won after a selection period, which inspired the creation of 4,029 projects that came from 113 countries. The projects were posted on the website www.peugeotconcours-design.com between September and December 2006.

Beginning in March, the Flux project will be replicated to full scale and presented in Peugeot's booth for the next Frankfurt Auto show in September 2007. Starting in March is essential since it allows the teams in Peugeot's Style Center and Microsoft Game Studios to capture the project and have a design that is true to the author's vision and spirit, in terms of realistic handling and driving sensations.

"Project Gotham Racing 4" is an exclusive Xbox 360 title and will be the latest installment from Bizarre Creations' beloved racing franchise.

"We are excited to work with Peugeot in helping to visualize the future of Peugeot vehicle design. The Flux is a perfect fit for PGR4," said Martyn Chudley, Managing Director of Bizarre Creations. "We were impressed with the innovative and the extreme car designs submitted; We hope that Mihai Panaitescu will be excited when he sees The Flux faithfully created on the Xbox 360. We look forward to adding a lot of 'Gotham' to its chassis!"

From Designer Mihai Panitescu:

My intention was to design a vehicle that pleases it's occupants in every way. It's versatility combined with it's sportiness and the ability to use it in different environments are in my opinion some of the vehicle's strong points.

Either as an explorer of sandy beaches, sweeping mountain roads, or simply commuting in the city, the Flux concept embodies a vehicle that is made to please. It's dynamic shape and open air cockpit make it lively and fun to drive as the occupants are always in contact with their surroundings.

The name Flux was inspired by the continuous change and flow of our daily lives during work and play. The shape also represents this flow with transitions through hard and smooth lines, between straight and curved all of which are characteristics of Peugeot.

A relatively small car (3500cm long by 1650cm wide), it runs on a slim hydrogen power plant hidden in the back along with the tank mounted under the front bonnet. The hood and side body panels are made from plastic, polyurethane for the seats and aluminium for the mechanical parts.

The main components such as the chassis and head protection are metal.
Made up of simple body work (basic intersected volumes) the car is easily produced and accessible to everyone but most of all, it's fun to drive.

Adding to this, the car is also a gaming hub thanks to the integrated Xbox 360 so P.L.E.A.S.E. hop in!!!

Recall: Peugeot calls back 240,000 307s

On the wave of recalls occurring in North America, Peugeot issued a recall on its most important car in Europe. A potential short circuit can be caused in the ABS/stability control mechanicals in the Peugeot 307. A defective seal that houses the ABS and the stability control can be infiltrated with water, which can result in these short circuits. The affected models were assembled between 2003 and 2006. Approximately 240,000 units are affected, which is around 12% of the 2 million units of the 307 sold in Europe.

Official: Peugeot reveals new 308

After many revealing spyshots of the 308 undergoing testing surfaced on the web, Peugeot decided to officially reveal the evolutionary 308 today. The exterior of the car seems more of an evolution of the 307 while the interior is quite the unexpected. The exterior also seems fit to describe as a bloated 207.

The interior shows some retro touches including individual slots for the CD changer and the circular air vents which give the 308 the elegance it deserves. Peugeot did not reveal any technical specs, but sources say it will be available with the 207's 1.6L 120hp, 1.6L 150hp turbo and a 2.2L 170hp turbodiesel in the higher-end trims. The 308 will make public debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show this September. Speculations note that the 308 will go on sale this fall. The Coupe-Convertible version should launch a year later. Follow the jump to view the other two images.

Geneva: 2007 Peugeot 407 SW Sport XS

Peugeot’s distinctive 407 SW is soon to be available in a new ‘Sport XS’ trim level for those wanting highly-distinctive, versatile transportation. Available from £23,995 OTR, the 407 SW Sport XS enhances its class-leading feature specification, combining the acclaimed 2.2-litre HDi 170 diesel engine with a stylish exterior.

Designed to provide owners with a more distinctive visual treatment, the 407 SW Sport XS features, in addition to the high-standard Sport specification; 18” Soleil alloy wheels (already standard on V6 HDi versions), front bumper spoilers, rear tailgate spoiler, a sports mesh front grille and twin sports exhaust...

[Source: WorldCarFans]

Follow the jump to continue reading the article and more images.

407 SW Sport XS is available in four metallic colours – Onyx Black, Aluminium, Iron Grey or Halcyon Blue – with Zino half leather upholstery as standard. In addition, leather upholstery in either Mistral Black or Cerbere Red is also available as a factory option as is the new RT4 Multi-Media system available to order at £995.

The 407’s 2.2-litre HDi is an evolution of the existing 2.2 DW12 TED4 engine, and utilises the latest advances in diesel technology by combining power, refinement and excellent fuel economy. It is the fourth phase of the cooperation between PSA Peugeot Citroën and the Ford Motor Company (initiated in 1998).

The quest to deliver an outstanding state of the art diesel engine has resulted in the creation of a twin turbocharged, parallel sequential induction system that gives unrivalled levels of power and responsiveness, even at low revs. The first low inertia turbo operates up to 2,700 rpm, and gives an immediate response to throttle input. As the revs rise, the second, smaller turbo kicks in seamlessly to give enhanced performance throughout the rest of the rev range. The new HDi 170 is fully compliant with Euro 4 regulations, and produces a maximum torque output of 277 lb ft at only 1,500 rpm, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Technical Overview

The in-line four-cylinder diesel engine has 16 valves (4 valves per cylinder) with direct injection and two fixed geometry turbochargers. Bosch injection, with piezoelectric injectors, delivers high-pressure fuel from the pump driven by the exhaust camshaft. There are two overhead camshafts (of which only the exhaust camshaft is driven by the timing belt).

Geneva: 2007 Peugeot 207 RC

The 207 RC will be launched at the beginning of the spring and will write the next chapter in Peugeot’s history of small performance cars, such as the 205 GTi of the 1980s and, more recently, the 206 RC. Both of these cars especially delighted enthusiasts with their pure driving enjoyment and provoked much jealousy from drivers of less sporty versions.

The 207 RC is the modern evolution of a compact vehicle with a strong sporting temperament. The sophisticated technology fitted to the car is a result of Peugeot’s expertise in building this type of vehicle. It is a very multitalented car which is easy to live with on a day-to-day basis, whilst still able to provide a driving experience to satisfy the “enthusiast in everyone”.

The 207 RC will make its world premiere in the Geneva Auto Salon in March.

PRESS RELEASE:

207 RC – Performance par excellence

PEUGEOT IS PROUD OF ITS HISTORIC AND SPORTING HERITAGE IN THE SMALL PERFORMANCE CAR SEGMENT, ESPECIALLY WITH THE LEGENDARY "20" SERIES. WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW PEUGEOT 207, IT WAS ONLY NATURAL THAT A 207 RC WOULD ALSO BE PART OF THE RANGE.

The 207 RC will be launched at the beginning of the spring and will write the next chapter in Peugeot's history of small performance cars, such as the 205 GTi of the 1980s and, more recently, the 206 RC. Both of these cars especially delighted enthusiasts with their pure driving enjoyment and provoked much jealousy from drivers of less sporty versions.

The 207 RC is the modern evolution of a compact vehicle with a strong sporting temperament. The sophisticated technology fitted to the car is a result of Peugeot's expertise in building this type of vehicle. It is a very multitalented car which is easy to live with on a day-to-day basis, whilst still able to provide a driving experience to satisfy the "enthusiast in everyone".

The 207 RC combines

The elegant and strong styling characteristics of the 207 3-door "Sport" model... enhanced by an improved specification with a hint of luxury. This combination creates a sporting look that enthusiasts will relish;

The strong and assertive personality of the 207... and a turbocharged petrol engine with direct petrol injection and a maximum power output of 128 kW ( 175 bhp) and a torque of 240 Nm - developed in co-operation with the BMW Group. With its high torque output, this engine offers a very high level of performance underlined by a very sporty exhaust note;

The universally praised handling qualities of the 207 range... are combined with the latest safety equipment which has been selected and developed by Peugeot using all its knowledge in this field. The result is excellent road holding and a level of active safety never before achieved in this market segment, enabling any driver to enjoy driving the 207 RC to the full;

A passenger compartment which is welcoming, ergonomically designed and fully equipped for motoring enthusiasts. Its sporty character can be enjoyed on a daily basis, but for a taste of competitive driving, just fit a safety harness etc... and head for the nearest racing circuit ....

While the raison d'être of the 207 RC is to appeal to individuals who are passionate about driving, the car's standard specification will be left to the discretion of the different markets. Therefore, the 207 RC can appeal to "performance purists" with a version focused mainly on the technology package and its necessary equipment.

207 RC

Genuine performance car looks

The 207 RC has the same length of 4.037 m as the 207 Sport hatchback, the same dynamic 3-door body shape with its expressive look at the front, combined with a wider front and rear track and wheel arches inspired by the 206 WRC and the world of motor sport.

Its styling is based on strong but subtly recognisable traits - performance-enhancing features and exclusive finishing touches - all symbols of its personality.

Ready to put to the test, the Bridgestone Potenza 205/45R17W tyres mounted on new 17" nine-spoke "Pitlane" wheels, a rear spoiler to optimise aerodynamic efficiency at high speed and a trapezoid twin chrome exhaust, all confirm the 207 RC's sporty character.

Its efficient design and look confirm its purpose, thanks to the dark "black chrome" masking of the feline shaped headlamps.

The choice of exterior colours for the 207 RC captures the performance car feel perfectly with existing colours including: Bianca White, Flamenco Red, Obsidien Black, Metallic Grey, Aegean Blue and a new pearlescent anthracite colour - Shark Grey - which particularly reflects the car's temperament.

This new colour is reserved for the RC only, as is the dark tinted rear windscreen and rear windows, the bright finish of the door B-post trims and the hi-tech satin chrome door mirror covers.

The heart of an "athlete"... power on demand

The 1.6 litre THP (Turbo High Pressure) engine produces a maximum power of 128 kW ( 175 bhp) and a torque of 240 Nm from only 1600 rpm. The torque output of the engine remains unchanged all the way up to 4500 rpm but can be increased to 260 Nm temporarily, thanks to the "over-boost" function. It is fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox with specific gear ratios.

This engine is characterised by its high power output and maximum torque produced at very low engine speeds, offering exceptional acceleration while maintaining constant speed fuel consumption at a reasonable level.

With the driver only in the car, performance figures are as follows:

Maximum speed: 220 km/h
1000 m standing start: 27.8 s
0 - 100 km/h: 7.1 s
80 - 120 km/h (5th gear): 7.0 s
Combined fuel consumption: 7.2 litres/100 km (171 g of CO2/km)
To achieve both excellent performance and low fuel consumption the engine includes a number of innovative features, such as:

Direct, high-pressure petrol injection, allowing a high power output and also low fuel consumption and low emissions. The system consists of a high-pressure injection pump supplying individual fuel injectors that inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber at a maximum pressure of 120 bar.

An "over-boost" system, enabling the torque output to be increased temporarily from 240 Nm to 260 Nm in the top three gears.

A Twin-Scroll turbocharger, which first appeared on the THP 150 bhp engine, which combines the exhaust gases flowing from two individual cylinders in the exhaust manifold before they enter the turbocharger compressor. The combined flow of the exhaust gasses is directed through "Scrolls" in the turbocharger turbine housing increasing the force applied to "rotate" the turbine. The direct result is a reduction in the turbocharger response time (turbo lag). The turbocharger compressor of this new and extremely efficient engine is made of steel due to the high operating temperatures.

Continuously variable timing of the inlet camshaft (Variable Valve Timing (VVT)) and the use of roller cam followers, help to reduce internal friction and increase power and torque while also reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The controlled output oil pump supplies only the exact volume of oil required by the engine and eliminates unnecessary engine power consumption and the detrimental effect on fuel consumption.

Trained muscles

The excellent road holding of the 207 RC is a result of the strong structural design of the 207 and its proven suspension setup, developed to enhance both safety and driving pleasure.

Strengthened McPherson type front struts and front ball joints, a stiffer rear torsion beam, changes to the stiffness of the front and rear springs and damper settings, electric power steering calibrated according to the new performance levels, and larger ventilated front disc brakes (302 x 26 mm), distinguish the 207 RC from the rest of the range. A car with performance in its genes, the 207 RC is equipped as standard with the latest-generation ESP system which can be switched off fully, thereby disconnecting the traction control, yaw control and emergency braking assistance functions. This will, therefore, allow more demanding and experienced drivers to appreciate the exceptional handling of the 207 RC, particularly on a racing circuit.

A new innovation: the SSP function (Steering Stability Program)

This function manages the dialogue between the ESP system functions and the vehicle's electric power steering when braking on surfaces that have different grip levels for the right-hand and left-hand wheels.

The system applies more braking power to the wheels with good grip and, anticipating any vehicle instability, applies torque to the steering to help the driver achieve optimal directional control. Unlike an ABS system which limits braking of the wheels with good grip to give priority to vehicle control, this system reduces braking distances by around 4 % while still guaranteeing vehicle stability in a straight line.

A passenger compartment for enthusiasts passionate about motor sport… and others

A sporty interior...

Firmly anchored in the world of motor sport, the passenger compartment of the 207 RC accommodates each of its four potential occupants in "bucket" style seats that provide excellent support. The sculpted and ergonomically designed front seats have been based on those used in motor sport and trimmed in dark "alcantara" with a matching 3D mesh. Their visual appeal is enhanced by visible light-coloured stitching which matches that of the passenger compartment "alcantara" trimmed door panels, carpets, and the gear lever gaiter.

The very stylish "furnishings" of the 207 RC interior are combined with:

An instrument panel which is similar to that usually found on a motor bike, with its circular chrome-trimmed dials, checked graphics, rounded typography and red needles.

The smooth, perforated, leather steering wheel has moulded thumb grips and is further enhanced by a ring with an "Indy" decoration - an exclusive, soft-to-the-touch material is used on the air vent controls and centre console of the 207 RC. Aluminium pedals with non-slip pads finish of the driver's footwell area.

...To be enjoyed in complete safety...

The 207 RC benefits from the 207's strong and protective structure that incorporates a number of innovative solutions to protect the occupants in the event of a front impact, such as the double impact absorption bars and the door retention pins for side impact. Combined with six air bags and two Isofix child safety seat mountings at the rear, the 207 was awarded five stars in the EuroNCAP test for adult occupants, four stars for child occupant protection and three stars in the test to assess the protection offered to pedestrians involved in a collision with the vehicle.

...not forgetting equipment for comfort and convenience...

Occupants of the 207 RC will appreciate the automatic dual-zone air conditioning and comfort equipment (standard or optional according to destination) such as the MP3 compatible CD / radio, the JBL Hi-fi system, or the Peugeot RT3 telematics system with RDS radio, GPS satellite navigation and GSM telephone with 7'' 16/9 colour display. In addition, drivers of the 207 RC will also benefit from a number of driving aids and safety systems, including as standard.

A rear parking aid, elliptical headlamps incorporating static directional lighting, a speed limiter coupled with a cruise control, headlamps which automatically switch on or automatic windscreen wipers with a rain sensor, tyre under-inflation sensors, folding electric door mirrors and an electro-chrome interior rear-view mirror...

Geneva: Peugeot 207 SW Outdoor Concept

As with all versions of its 207 compact, Peugeot is previewing the upcoming 207 SW with a concept. The 4.156 mm long 207 Outdoor ads a crossover look to the SW (which should be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Show) thanks to its 4x4 themed bodykit and the slightly raised road clearance. Beside the large panorama glass roof and a separately opening back window the Concept Car is characterized by the redesigned rear end which draws several styling elements from the 407 SW and 1007.

PRESS RELEASE:

207 SW OUTDOOR Concept car - An Outdoor Companion

Whilst the 207 CC has been launched to the public, another member of the 207 range, an additional silhouette is announced via a concept car that also benefits from its strong personality: the 207 SW Outdoor concept. The car's personality is displayed through its dynamic modern styling, and strong character combined with its abundant qualities.

This concept car is for those who love open-air sport and leisure activities, who are in search of unique and intense experiences.

Its style, the bodywork, its interior and the attention that has been given to colours and materials used, enables the vehicle to combine dreams of adventure with functional ingenuity.

Exterior: Dynamic and Purposeful

The 207 SW Outdoor manages to be stylish by the use of the front of the 207 combined with a new original design of the rear, giving real benefits, whilst at the same time retaining the character and intensity of the original Peugeot design.

The line of the side windows flows up to the rear quarter panel where the arrow design is similar to that found on the 407 SW and 1007. The large rear lights strengthen this association by, starting further up from the rear wings, and following the bodyline, in perfect balance with the stylish front headlights. The technical and innovative appearance of the lights is fashioned in the same manner as that of a precious stone, creating a transparent effect, with an intense chrome blue and orange appearance. From the back these lights visually emphasise the vehicle's larger rear design, synonymous with durability, good road holding and provides a large loading area when the tailgate is opened.

The rear tailgate glass can also be opened independently of the tailgate as it is hinged on the two visual hinges.

The bodywork mouldings (the wing extensions, sill mouldings) are all in a bluish chrome colour and circumvent the body shell, highlighting the exclusive appearance of the model whilst at the same time equally expressing its spirit of adventure. In the same way, the inbuilt guards in the front and rear bumpers, together with the vehicle's generous ground clearance underline its "all terrain" aspirations.

Also of note on the vehicle as a whole is the use of bright orange to highlight items such as the brake calipers..., which brightens the blue shade of the body shell "02" and the bluish chrome detailing.

Finally, the roof bars define the large panoramic glass sunroof in a very original way.

Interior: Brightness and Energy

The interior ambience is strengthened by the brightness created by the glass roof. The "outdoors" is in effect brought into the cabin of this 207 SW Outdoors. The fascia, with its light and flowing design, is common with the rest of the 207 range, and here is trimmed in a bluish light grey leather, to match the bodywork.

The seats and the door panels are trimmed in a "technical material" (parachute silk), luminous, creating a freshness and greater intensity to the interior. The use of fluorescent orange netting creates a dynamic feel, visually creating a link with the exterior of the vehicle.

On the rear of the front seats, the same netting can be found for the seat pockets specially developed for storing various objects, which would be found in this type of concept (torch, bottle, map, compass...)

The vehicle's modularity enables all kinds of sporting equipment to be easily loaded, thanks to a system that is as simple as it is ingenious - the rear seats have been designed to fold down in one movement to, give a perfectly flat space, the seat disappears into the floor at the point of the folded backrest.

Engine

The car is equipped with an engine that goes with its 'Sporty' spirit, a 1.6 litre HDi 16v with a diesel particulate filter system (DPFS). Dynamic (with a maximum torque of 240 Nm at 1750 rpm, indeed 260 Nm with the overboost, and a maximum power of 80kW, around 110 bhp, at 4000 rpm).

It is also economical to use with low CO2 emissions. The diesel particulate filter system (DPFS) also helps to preserve the environment by trapping and destroying soot particles.

DIMENSIONS (mm)

Length - 4156
Width between the door handles - 1748
Wheelbase - 2540

Exterior

The pearlescent Hagénias Bronze body colour paintwork combines harmoniously with the vehicle's chrome detailing to accentuate the exclusive nature of this 4007 by emphasising its power and feline qualities combined with the presence of its style and 'all-terrain' character.

Water-resistant leather features on the door mirror casings and roof bars, while the "Holland&Holland" logo, the hood of a royal falcon, is applied to the rear quarter panels.

A blend of "Ebony" and "Chartreuse Green" leathers (Holland&Holland colour codes) enhanced by smooth leather edging and original stitching, creates a natural, exclusive and innovative feel.

The leather trim covering the passenger compartment is entirely hand-crafted by leather craftsmen from the Peugeot Style Centre. It blends harmoniously with the shape of the fascia panel, the special finish of the seats and the design of the door panels.

Geneva: 2008 Peugeot 4007

Say hello to the Peugeot 4007, which will make its debut in Geneva with its sibling, the Citroën C-Crosser. Like we said, the two are interchangeable, so that means each gets everything their source vehicle, the Mitsubishi Outlander, offers. Like the Citroën, the new Pug is powered by a 2.2L HDi diesel putting forth 160 hp (156 hp EEC).

Unlike the Citroen, the Peugeot is saddled with a face only a mother could love. The giant mouthlike grille with its pronounced vertical elements looks like it'd be more appropriate on a plankton-slurping baleen whale than an SUV. Also, note the added grillework behind the little hood-mounted lion badge. Suffice to say that we're generally unmoved by the styling up front. You can check it (and the rest of the car) out in detail via the attached gallery.

An interesting aside on the name: The "00" names are reserved for Peugeot vehicles that are different and/or original, and outside the standard model range. The only other Peugeot that falls into this category is the nifty, sliding-doored 1007 city car.

This dynamic appearance is strengthened by the finish of the lower front panel, which incorporates fog lamps and air intakes embellished with chrome surrounds. The confident design reflects the elegance and refinement that characterises the Peugeot style.

Almond-shaped smooth-glass headlamps are positioned over the front wings, forming the link between the wraparound front panel, the wings and the ribbed bonnet which enhances the luxurious and robust appearance of 4007. A large Peugeot badge is set at the front of the centre ribbed design located at the top leading edge of the bonnet.

The curved wings contribute to the strong presence of the vehicle. Its wide wheel arches, large alloy wheels and elevated ground clearance provide clear evidence of the dynamic potential of the 4007, regardless of where it is to be driven.

The elegant profile of the 4007 also reinforces its sporty appearance, thanks in particular to an aerodynamic roof line. Chrome finish to the window frames and sill mouldings are tasteful highlights that provide genuine attractive qualities.

The style at the rear is accentuated by translucent ruby lights with a curved profile, and located under the rear screen they frame a brushed aluminium trim with the Peugeot brand clearly displayed above the chrome Lion logo.

While the lower tailgate extends down to the body sill to preserve the robust structure and elegant appearance of 4007, the design incorporates an upper opening hatch with a glazed rear screen and provides convenient access to the boot area.

The interior design also enhances the sporty and luxury feel of the 4007. The black fascia panel, with its special soft texture, has a clear and attractive style. Instrumentation has deep contoured dials with a sports layout with information and warning details displayed between the tachometer and speedometer dials.

The interior is trimmed throughout with a strong Peugeot identity. An aluminium coloured finish is used to highlight air vent surrounds, grab handles and other key controls. The seats are manufactured from a high-quality three-part fabric, adding a further sporty touch. This also applies to the seats in the versions trimmed in high quality leather that also features attractive visible stitching.

4007 dimensions

With a length of 4.64m and a width of 1.80m, Peugeot's SUV stands out by its height (1.67m) and above all by its ground clearance (174mm), a sign of its ability and capability to venture off road. Equipped with 5 doors, the 4007 has seating for up to seven people, the rear two seats of which fold flat into the rear boot floor space.

Designed with versatility in mind,
its has a highly modular load area to permit a boot volume of up to 510 dm3 under the parcel shelf (VDA standard) in the 5-seat configuration, which can be extended to 1686 dm3 in the two-seat configuration.

In addition, due to its split tailgate configuration, the flat loading sill height is only 600mm from the ground.

A benchmark structure

The body structure has been developed with the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and evolves their wealth of experience for safety and all-terrain capability in building 4x4 SUVs of great reputation.

Much work was carried out to achieve a structure that is both extremely rigid for rigorous vehicle handling yet deformable in key areas to absorb energy to protect occupants in the event of an impact. The side members have an octagonal cross-section which helps to control the dissipation of energy. As a result, in the event of frontal impacts at low speed, energy is absorbed by the front section of the side member and not transmitted rearward, a by-product of which minimises insurance repair costs.

The front side members located at the back of the centre of the bulkhead panel and lower structure by three 'legs'. These legs disperse the energy generated across each structure. Reinforcement bars located in the doors also protect occupants in the event of a side impact, as does impact absorbing padding inserted into the door panels.

Being a 4x4 vehicle and therefore being taller than traditional cars, the structure has been designed to ensure 'crash compatibility' in the event of collision, providing effective protection to occupants of all affected vehicles.

The power train, mounted in the transverse position, is positioned within the chassis which is reinforced by a central cross member under the engine. Hydraulic mountings, combined with a set of reaction link rods, reduce the transmission of engine vibration.

The roof is constructed of aluminium to lighten the upper vehicle weight by 5 kg and thereby reduces the centre of gravity by around 4mm.

The full CAN electronic architecture is similar to that found on current Peugeot vehicles.

Finally, to preserve the ground clearance and at the same time give the car an adequate range, the fuel tank, with a total capacity of 60 litres, is cleverly divided into two, located on either side of the rear transmission and connected by a transfer pump system.

Wheels and suspension

4007 benefits from the latest technologies by featuring large alloy wheels and tyres capable of high levels of on-road refinement combined with an off-road grip capability which extends the versatility for leisure use, characterised by modern-day SUVs.

The 4007 features independent suspension on all four wheels, with McPherson type struts at the front, with a 22mm anti-roll bar and a multi-arm design at the rear, with a 20mm anti-roll bar.

A lot of attention has been paid with the tyre manufacturers to develop an 18" tyre (225/55 R18) suitable for both on-road and modest off-road driving. A 16" tyre (215/70 R16) has also been developed for more extreme leisure pursuits where the vehicles driving abilities in under poor conditions are more important.

Peugeot engineers have specified double piston calipers with front ventilated discs to maximise braking efficiency. The front brakes have a diameter of 294mm x 24mm and at the rear, solid discs with a diameter of 302mm.

4007 features pump-assisted hydraulic steering modulated according to engine speed. Its performance has been fine-tuned in conjunction with tyre development to give the assured feeling of control characterised in other Peugeot vehicles. Qualities of linearity, accuracy and self-centring ensure fluid handling and an excellent level of driveability in all situations.

Body rigidity has benefited from Peugeot's chassis and dynamic handling expertise to give the 4007 the driveability similar to a modern hatchback, while maintaining a level of comfort in keeping with the car's versatile capabilities> Spring stiffness and damping characteristics have been tuned specifically to the vehicle and its 2.2-litre power unit.

Electronically controlled 4-wheel drive

The 4007 is equipped with an innovative 'on demand' 4-wheel drive system. An electronic system controls a viscous clutch located ahead of the rear axle to distribute torque between the front and rear axles to thereby optimising engine and transmission performance. This technology is developed by the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, a recognised specialist in 4-wheel drive transmissions.

The transmission features a transfer box located on the gearbox output and directs torque to the rear axle via a longitudinal propshaft. An Electronic Control Unit (ECU) calculates in real time parameters such as the vehicle speed, steering wheel angle, the difference in speed of rotation of the front and rear wheels and the level of acceleration, in order to electronically control the viscous clutch assembly.

4-wheel drive on demand

The driver can select three driving modes by selecting the mode on a central knob located between the two front seats:

2-wheel drive mode (2WD)

This mode corresponds to driving on tarmac when the driver does not expect any loss of traction (a dry road). The vehicle operates most efficiently in front-wheel drive (2WD), thereby reducing fuel consumption.

Automatic 4-wheel drive mode (4WD)

This is the vehicle's normal operating mode, with torque distribution between the front and rear axles controlled by the ECU. This provides the assurance of optimal road holding regardless of surface conditions. The table below provides a summary of torque distribution between the two axles according to different driving conditions.

4-wheel drive lock mode (4WD)

Used under conditions of reduced traction, four-wheel drive becomes permanent with a higher distribution of torque to the rear wheels compared to the 4WD mode. This is the case in particular at low speed, where 50% of the additional torque will be distributed to the rear wheels compared to the automatic 4WD mode.

Engines

4007 is launched with a latest-generation HDi Diesel engine derived from a co-operation between the PSA Peugeot Citroën and the Ford Motor Company.

With a capacity of 2.2-litres, the engine develops a maximum power of 115 kW at 4000 rpm, or around 156bhp CEE. This is a single-turbo version of the 2.2-litre HDi 125 kW engine, but with variable geometry, and was recently introduced in the 407 and 607 ranges.

To ensure a high level of driveability and exploit to the full the maximum torque of 380 Nm available from low engine speeds (2000 rpm), a 6-speed manual gearbox manufactured by 'Aisin' is coupled with the engine.

This power unit is characterised by a high level of verve and dynamic performance which is approaching that of modern Peugeot hatchbacks in the upper middle segment. Handling characteristics set the 4007 apart from its direct competitors, namely other compact SUVs.

The engine is equipped with the latest-generation Diesel Particulate Filter System (DPFS). Due to its electronic management and the use of an additive to reduce the 'particle' combustion temperature, as well as the 'octosquare' filter element shape, the filter's service interval has been extended to 180,000 km. This reinforces Peugeot's environmental credentials as one of the leading manufacturers in the clean technology stakes and most specifically where the elimination of diesel particle emissions is important.

Safety

In addition to the four-wheel drive and strong body structure, 4007 benefits from the latest technologies to protect its occupants in the event of impact and avoid driving hazards. ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) is a standardfit feature on the 4007. This system enhances the vehicle's stability by controlling the braking and engine power applied to individual wheels. The electronic system helps to keep the vehicle on the trajectory required by the driver, by controlling oversteer and correcting understeer during vigorous use of the steering wheel or under precarious road conditions.

It should be emphasised that compared to a classic hatchback, the 4WD transmission, coupled with the ESP system, also controls torque transmitted to the rear wheels, thereby increasing the efficiency of the stability control system. In addition, as well as ABS, the vehicle incorporates a traction control system which monitors traction and improves engine performance and vehicle behaviour during acceleration in curves or on a gradient.

In terms of passive safety, the 4007 is equipped with six airbags: two front airbags, two side airbags and two curtain airbags.

The adaptive front airbags inflate to two levels according to the severity of the impact. The passenger air bag can be switched off by means of the ignition key switch located in the glove box to allow for the installation of a rear-facing child seat. An indicator on the fascia panel reminds occupants if the airbag has been switched off.

The side airbags are housed in the back of the front seats. In the event of a side impact they protect the chest and upper part of the body. The curtain airbags also protect the heads of the passengers in rows one and two in the event of side impact.

For child safety, the 4007 offers Isofix mounting points in all three row-two seats. To alert the driver that a seat belt has been unfastened while driving, an audible signal is emitted together with a message on the instrument panel.

The enlarged field of vision combined with the raised driving position, a characteristic of SUVs, means the driver will feel safer when driving in traffic. Passengers also benefit from this raised position and from the panoramic view by the large glazed surface area of the 4007.

Modularity and versatility

The 4007 can accommodate up to seven people, thanks to a third row of seats which retracts into the floor of the boot. These two cleverly designed additional seats can be manipulated easily by means of three straps: one for unlocking, one for deployment and one for folding. Occasional passengers occupying the retractable bench seat benefit from head restraints and seat belts with inertia reels just like the other occupants.

The row-two seats split 40/60 and can slide over a distance of 80mm. Additional to these functions is the possibility of folding the entire bench seat in a concertina fashion by means of an automatic device. Two switches located on the right-hand and left-hand sides of the boot allow electrical unlocking of the bench seat, which then folds double by the action of springs. It is also possible to fold one section of the bench seat manually by means of two knobs located on ether side of the seats.

This allows access to the two retractable seats and can free up additional load volume. Thanks to these modular configurations, the boot offers exceptional load volumes. With row-two fully retracted, the load volume up to the roof is 1686 dm3 (VDA standard). In a more conventional configuration, with the second row in place, the volume under the parcel shelf is 463 dm3. This can be increased to 510 dm3 with the bench seat as far forward as possible, due to its slide system. With seven people in the car, the boot volume to the level of the row-three seat backs is still 184 dm3.

The boot, easily accessible because of the split opening tailgate, is easy to load. The lower part of the tailgate can take a load of 200 kg. Due to the flat floor and the absence of a load sill, heavy objects laid on the lower tailgate are easy to slide inside the boot.

A removable and adjustable flexible roller-blind can be used to conceal the boot's contents.

Highly modular and cleverly designed, the interior of the 4007 is therefore ideal for versatile use.

Clever numerous storage spaces

Maximising the interior space of 4007 is demonstrated by the many storage spaces available.

Two glove boxes are available in the upper and lower part of the fascia panel. The lower glove box can be locked with the key, while the upper one is refrigerated.

There is a small closed storage space at the top of the centre console, while a swivel storage unit in the roof can hold a pair of glasses. Behind the courtesy light, a recess can accommodate a car park ticket or toll ticket and cup holders are accessible on the driver's side and between the front seats. The door panels house a large storage area in the lower section able to hold a halflitre bottle.

The central front armrest, adjustable over a length of 65mm, opens in two parts. The lower part, which has a 12 volt connector, can contain up to 10 CDs. The upper part lets occupants keep small objects such as mobile phones within arm's reach and the rear central armrest also incorporates two cup holders.

In car comfort

Particular attention has been paid to acoustic comfort, particularly in terms of engine noise insulation, ensuring a high level of comfort for this vehicle range and engine type.

From the point of view of temperature, passengers in the 4007 benefit from automatic air conditioning equipped with a pollen and dust filter, which guarantees a regulated interior temperature between 18° and 32 °C.

Multimedia equipment

With a view to comfort and convenience, the latest-generation of audio and telematic equipment is available. According to market versions, 4007 is specified with a single-CD / radio / MP3 player, or a radio / MP3 player with 6-disc CD Autochanger. In all cases, 6 speakers with a total power of 140W to provide clear sound entertainment.

Available as an option in some markets, it is possible to choose a high-performance 'Rockford Fosgate' Hi-Fi system with a maximum output of 650W. For perfect reproduction of high fidelity sound, eight speakers are distributed in the passenger compartment accompanied by a bass cabinet in the boot. This unit incorporates absorbent materials designed to reduce vibration and any audible interference liable to diminish sound quality.

A colour satellite navigation system with 7" touch screen is also available as an option. The integral 30GB hard disk contains cartography for Europe (NAVTEQ), leaving 10GB free to store around 2500 tracks in MP3 or WMA formats.

Further equipment, like Bluetooth hands-free kit, a DVD player incorporated in the position of the courtesy light with a retractable 9" screen, or a sunroof can supplement the 4007s standard specification.
