Volkswagen developing seven-seat SUV - report

According to a recent report, Volkswagen is developing a seven-seat crossover for the United States.

Details are limited, but Auto Express is reporting the model will built alongside the US-spec Passat in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This will enable the crossover to be priced less than the $44,450 Touareg, which has suffered low sales due to its premium positioning.

As we have previously reported, Jonathan Browning - the CEO of Volkswagen America - is particularly bullish on SUVs. He sees them as vital to Volkswagen's effort to become competitive in the United States and meet their goal of selling 800,000 vehicles annually by 2018.

Frankfurt: 2008 Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen unveiled the 2008 Tiguan at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Aimed at the Honda CR-V, Volkswagen is slowly approaching the would-be Toyota/Honda consumers rather than the higher German class. The Tiguan is slotted below the Touareg in the line-up.

The Tiguan was previewed by the Tiguan Concept shown last year at Los Angeles. Changes are subtle and the Tiguan expresses ruggedness and elegance, a perfect blend for the family man/adventurer. The Tiguan is available in three trim levels: Trend&Fun, Sport&Style and Track&Field. As the names suggest, the first two models are designed for on-road use while the last is designated for off-road as well.

The Tiguan is available in five power configurations, three gasolines and two diesels. The three gasoline models are all TSI direct-injection turbocharged engines. There are three horsepower flavours: 150PS, 170PS, and 200PS. The two diesel TDI engines produce an output of 140PS and 170PS and all pass the Euro-5 compliant standard. All variants are available via a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. All models are standard with a full-time 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Sales are expected to commence early next year.

PRESS RELEASE: 2008 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN

Volkswagen is showing the new Tiguan in a world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. This “small brother” of the Touareg can be recommended to all those car drivers who enjoy the individual visual appearance and versatility of a SUV, but also expect a premium level of comfort, agility and variability. Its chassis sets new standards in the world of SUVs, because it is extremely driving-active and safe. All five engines - for the first time on the global SUV market all engines are charged without exception - already deliver, powerful propulsion just above the idling speed. Today, the completely new and very quiet common rail TDIs already satisfy the Euro-5 standard that does not go into effect until 2009. Upon request, the Tiguan can be parked nearly automatically in the urban jungle by the Park Assist feature. Off-road, on the other hand, the latest radio-navigation system (RNS 510) navigates its occupants back to civilization using its off-road function. Meanwhile, with up to 1,510 liters of cargo space, the Tiguan exhibits van qualities. 2,500 kilograms of trailer load also define the absolute best value in the Tiguan segment.

Trend&Fun and Sport&Style as clever and agile all-round talents

Very intentionally, Tiguan - offered in the equipment versions Trend&Fun, Sport&Style and Track&Field - is being offered in two body variants: The Trend&Fun and Sport&Style versions were specifically designed for primarily on-road use. Their agile, safe and highly comfortable driving behaviors are equal to those of a car. At the same time, these Tiguans do not shy away from either off-road drives or trailer loads. They leave the really rock-tough off-road routes to the Tiguan Track&Field.

Track&Field for more serious off-road duty

The Tiguan Track&Field was specially designed for life off of the asphalted trails. Different than the Trend&Fun and Sport&Style versions, this especially adventure-friendly Tiguan exhibits a more extreme entry angle (28 instead of 18 degrees; maximum angle without the vehicle impacting the trail in front). As standard equipment the Tiguan Track&Field also has a newly developed off-road mode that awakens an entire armada of assistance systems to make drives off-road especially safe.

First SUV in the world exclusively with charged engines

As already outlines, the Tiguan is the first SUV in the world to be offered exclusively with charged engines. The advantage of engine charging: More power, less fuel consumption and lower emissions. Take the example of the gasoline engines: There will be three new TSIs - direct injection engines with turbocharging or turbocharging plus supercharging. The four cylinders deliver 110 kW / 150 PS, 125 kW / 170 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. Take the example of the diesel: A completely redeveloped generation of noticeably quieter common rail four cylinder engines is being employed here. The two TDIs output 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS and smash the Euro-5 emissions standard.

Full-time 4MOTION all-wheel drive and two six-speed gearboxes

Full-time all-wheel drive is absolutely essential off-road. On paved streets an intelligent all-wheel drive also improves active safety. In the Tiguan the latest generation of 4MOTION all-wheel drive is used. It is shifted by manual, or optionally automatic, six-speed transmissions. Both transmissions satisfy special off-road requirements. The manual transmission can be driven at an engine speed of 1,000 rpm or vehicle speed of just 6.69 km/h, for example; this practically equals the crawler gear of a reduction gearbox. The automatic transmission has gear level preselect; in off-road use it prevents shifting to the next higher gear.

A SUV interior with the variability of a van

The Tiguan is an all-round talent. This characterization not only describes its powertrain properties, but also the multivariable and very spacious interior. The rear bench seat is split with a 60:40 ratio, it can be adjusted 16 centimeters in the longitudinal direction, and the rear seatback has multiple tilt adjustment settings. This provides either more legroom in the rear or additional space in the cargo area. Available as an option is a double cargo f loor including cargo management system. Also standard on the Tiguan Track&Field and Sport&Style is a folding front passenger seat so that very long objects can be stowed. With regard to the seat position, the passengers travel exceptionally comfortably, not only in front but also in the rear. The reason: Similar to the case in a movie theater, rear passenger seating is a bit higher and therefore more relaxed.

The Tiguan parks independently and finds the way back from the desert all by itself

On board an SUV for the first time is the Park Assist feature, with which the Tiguan turns into a parking space nearly automatically and impressively. The off-road mode already mentioned is a technology show; no other SUV in the world can call upon such a network of safety systems off-road at the press of a button. The Tiguan also exhibits its mastery when it comes to trailer load: It may range up to 2,500 kilograms, which is handled by the new, swiveling trailer hitch. In a class by themselves are the touchscreen radio and navigation systems; the top model (RNS 510) offers a standard 30 gigabyte hard disk memory, an off-road navigation mode and rearview camera. Any of the passengers can also look through a panorama sunroof at the sky of the savannah or the city.

Frankfurt: Volkswagen Up! Concept

Volkswagen has unveiled the first iteration of their upcoming rear-engined city car. The Up! Concept brings flexibility, practicality, and the economy of a city car, with style. The Up! seats four people and its dimensions are pretty roomy for a car this size: 3.45 meters in length and 1.63 meters in width. The engine sits at the rear and does so for the first time since the original Beetle was released over 50 years ago.

Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen, calls the Up! a "real Volkswagen". Maybe that's why the Phaeton didn't do so well. The Up! is one variant of a new range of small rear-engined vehicles in the line-up.

Reports are saying that the Up! will be sold for 8000 Euros when it goes on sale in Western Europe. In the remote parts of the world, the Up! will cost only 5000 to 7000 Euros. However, in that sense, goodies like power steering and A/C would be omitted. Continue reading to view a hi-res image gallery and the official press release.

PRESS RELEASE:

There are cars that endure for all times. They are icons of their type, masterpieces of craftsmanship and technology; they put ideas into motion, make progress tangible and sometimes quite simply make everyday life better, more practical and enjoyable. Many of these cars carry the VW logo. “Bug, Beetle, New Beetle”, “T1, Bulli, Samba bus, California”, “Golf, GTI”. Now Volkswagen is presenting – as a world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt – a concept car that once again has the right stuff needed to move more than just one generation. It is a small, pure and high-spirited Volkswagen that pays tribute to its environment. The overall concept is marked by an innovative, clear, intuitive functionality. The name of the concept car: up! – a positive name that is a synonym for departure, activity, dynamics and the future. “For Volkswagen”, says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member with Responsibility for Technical

Development, “the response of IAA visitors will be a decisive test to determine whether the concept has the same kind of potential
possessed by the Beetle at one time or by the Golf today.”

Concept

The up! is a city specialist, a car for four persons and all languages, for the job, the university, the drive to the beach and the excursion outside the city gates. A small car that shows a lot of size, because it offers more space than any other car of similar length (3.45 meters) and width (1.63 meters). Its engine – conceivable here are all facets of technology that can be sensibly applied – will run in the rear. And that changes everything: Space, mood and design.Walter de Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen group, sums it up like this: “The up! is not a car whose form will become obsolete within a very brief period of time. It shines in its cleverness and yet is made with loving care. And so the up! is a clear and strong statement for future Volkswagen design.” Furthermore, the team of designers and engineers has envisioned the up! concept car as the first member of an entire model line; other facets are entirely conceivable.

Ralf-Gerhard Willner, Director of Concept Development, has final responsibility for the technical layout of the up! He and Walter de Silva had already achieved a new balance in the mutual interaction between form and function at Volkswagen before the start of the project. “Absolute harmony of the basic technological concept and the emotional aspects of the design”, note Willner and de Silva in unison, “can only be achieved in a hard clash of ideas between engineers and designers. That is the only way to produce icons.” That is precisely why the up! is not your run-of-the-mill, small, tightly packed car, but instead is a clever, innovative whole. Its form is pure. It just had to look like this, no other look would do. There is nothing superf luous, and its functionality – and so also its design – speak for themselves. Simultaneously – and this is typical of Volkswagen – uncompromisingly attention was given to refining every line and every surface until we had created a friendly and masterful car.

Exterior design

The fact that the engine of the up! runs in the rear has a decisive inf luence on its exterior design. That is because the up! has no classic radiator grille. It forges links to the Beetle. This fact alone gives it a great deal of independence. Dominant design characteristics are the headlamps that take an inward and diagonal line, between them the horizontally arranged air vents, the VW logo (as one of the few details kept in chrome), the tailgate that extends far forward and the smooth bumper with a circumferential black stripe as a detail of the “happy face” that is typical of Volkswagen.

In many areas, technology and design have melded into a vehicle architecture that is not only appealing, but is also very utilitarian. The rear end of the up! is a good example of this. The tailgate was produced using a transparent material. Under this gate developers also integrated the high layout of the taillights.

Another feature that is technically and visually new is the location of the VW logo in the tailgate; it is also located behind glass and
illuminates when the light is on. The rear bumper was designed to match the “happy face” in front.

The powerful appearance of the up!, despite all of its compactness, is emphasized by a very wide track width (1.42 meters) relative to vehicle width. The wheels are flush with the sporty outboard wheel arches and side skirts. The radial design of the wheels and surfaces extending right up to the edge of the rim make the 18-inch wheels appear significantly larger than they actually are.

The wheels that are arranged far outboard in the bumper areas reduce body overhangs to a minimum. All of these features are part of an unmistakable side profile with a very long roof arch as well as clear and large surfaces. Giving shape to its style here are the large doors and the lateral window surfaces, which incline sharply upward at the height of the rear wheel arch and thereby
help to form the very independent C-pillar design.

Interior design

Mounting the engine in the rear opened up entirely new interior concepts. Relative to its exterior size, the space offering is exceptionally forward-thinking. The same is true of its variability: Except for the driver’s seat, all other seats can be folded and removed. Since they are designed as light shells, they can be quickly stowed in one of the cargo areas – besides the front trunk there is also one in the rear – to free up space. Afterwards, the entire passenger compartment length can be utilized as a storage area for especially bulky objects.

To achieve the high level of seating comfort that is usual at Volkswagen, besides their ergonomic design, in the case of the up! this level of comfort is also attained by a simple yet very effective trick: Similar to a self-inf lating air mattress, air can be sucked out of the seat surfaces via a valve. This means that the seats can be adjusted 1:1 to the body anatomies of the occupants who have just taken a seat.

Intuitive controls

On its up! concept car, Volkswagen is presenting some completely new solutions when it comes to operator controls. Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer for the Volkswagen Brand, comments on this: “Another reason the up! is so fascinating is because everything, every detail, was thought out anew. In the interior we have a touchscreen with new proximity sensor technology for controlling the navigation, radio, trip computer and climate control systems. It is operated absolutely intuitively. As a result, the most complicated functions can be controlled like child’s play.”

Volkswagen mulls diesel Rabbit for US market

With the release of the Jetta Clean Diesel TDI coming to US showrooms in March, 2008, Volkswagen is considering expansion of the Clean Diesel line-up with the Rabbit. The Jetta Clean Diesel TDI will be powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder producing 140 hp with 235 lb.ft of torque. The clean diesel powertrain is expected to expand throughout the line-up with the Rabbit first in line.

VW states that the clean diesel engine will be drastically improved in fuel efficiency and emission levels over the current 1.9L diesel. Pricing of the Jetta CD TDI is expected to be higher than its gasoline counterpart and it will be available only in California and New England when it hits showrooms.

Volkswagen officially unveils the Tiguan

Today, Volkswagen AG released the first official images of its compact SUV, Tiguan. The Tiguan is Volkswagen's second SUV and the Tiguan borrows its styling from the Tiguan Concept. It will be unveiled publicly in Frankfurt in September.

By taking a look at its styling and specs, the Tiguan is no match for its intended competitors like the BMW X3. However, if VW prices it right, it could stand a big chance against cheaper compact SUVs like the Hyundai Tucson and the Toyota RAV4. The interior of the Tiguan seems to be directly lifted from the Golf Plus, which is a downside for us. The Tiguan can be opted with an array of engine options. Two TDI engines and three TSI engines top out the list. The two diesels achieve 140HP and 170HP respectively, while the turbocharged direct injection gasoline engines achieve 150HP, 170HP and 200HP.

There is no word on when the Tiguan will reach showrooms in both Europe and North America. You can check out the developmental stages of the SUV at Tiguan Base. Follow the jump to view more images of the VW Tiguan.

PRESS RELEASE: Powerful appearance – this is the new Tiguan

- Statement: new Volkswagen SUV with powerful design

- Borderliner: predestined for the street, in top form for off-road

Wolfsburg, 28 June 2007 - With the first pictures of the new Tiguan Volkswagen is starting the countdown for the debut of it’s 14th model series. The Sports Utility Vehicle – SUV for short – will be presented to the public for the first time in September as part of the International Motor Show (IAA in Frankfurt). A combination of power and elegance characterizes the design of the new Tiguan. It was conceived as a borderliner between the urban world and endless landscapes, between business and leisure time. The Tiguan is a multitalent with driving characteristics that are just as agile as they are comfortable, high utility value and groundbreaking technologies.

Like the Touareg, the second Volkswagen SUV also presents a self-confident design. Shaping the front of the new Tiguan are the sexy proportions that Volkswagen first introduced with the Concept A Study that garnered worldwide attention – a crossover of a coupe and SUV. On the sides an elongated and powerfully modulated silhouette spans between the extended wheel arches with a – typical Volkswagen – unmistakable C-pillar. A very short overhang characterizes the steep rear end. Also significant are the front headlights and rear lights with matching shapes.

First facts on Tiguan engines: Volkswagen will offer the SUV – and this for the first time worldwide – exclusively with turbocharged direct injection engines. This "high-performance turbocharging" significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, yet immensely increases dynamics and driving fun.

Overall there are three TSI and two TDI engines. Of these the completely new developments are the extremely quiet TDIs with common rail fuel injection. They achieve 103 kW / 140 hp and 125 kW / 170 hp and at 1,750 rpm already output 320 Nm or 350 Nm in four-wheel drive. Both TDIs already meet the limits of the Euro-5 standard first coming into effect in 2009.

Also getting to the point powerfully, economically and cleanly are the turbocharged direct injection gasoline engines in the performance levels 110 kW / 150 hp, 125 kW / 170 hp and 147 kW / 200 hp. New to the Volkswagen program are the 150 hp and 170 hp versions. A glance at the torque values makes one sense that the TSIs are very high torque. The 150-hp TSI already develops a self-assured 240 Nm (from 1,750 rpm). In the 170 hp and 200 hp performance range it is 280 Nm (from 1,800 rpm each).

"Tiguan Base" on the internet shows just how big the interest is in the new Tiguan. Visitors to www.tiguan-base.com can log in to the virtual world of the Tiguan. The development stages of the new SUV are presented in photos, films and facts. Within just 15 weeks – and this is sensational – more than one million people have made use of it worldwide. It looks as though the Tiguan is developing into an exciting chapter in the history of the automobile.

Super Pocket Rocket: Volkswagen unveils GTI Pirelli

VW unveiled the Pirelli version of the GTI hatchback at the Wörthersee 2007. 25 years ago, in May of 1983, VW unveiled their first Pirelli version of the GTI and this one continues the tradition that went black. Along with the 650hp super-GTI and the quirky, but attractive Audi Clubsport quattro Concept, the GTI Pirelli made its debut in the most unexpected place. The Pirelli version is based on the GTI Edition 30, which the engine is tweaked to pump 30 more horsepowers, delivering 230hp as a result. It boasts a top speed of 245km/h (152mph) and a 0-100km/h (62mph) time of 6.8 sec (manual gearbox).

The minor visual features include: the Edition 30 bodykit, 18" Pirelli wheels coupled to Pirelli P-Zero tires, some Pirelli badges here and there, and special seats with tire tread design fabrics. The Pirelli GTI will be available in four colors: bright yellow, black pearl, silver, and blue graphite. It will go on sale in September.

PRESS RELEASE: The New Golf GTI Pirelli - Comeback of the GTI Pirelli

The Golf GTI Pirelli is back; a powerful, fast and very exclusive GTI. Volkswagen is continuing the history of one of the best known limited edition models in Europe. In May 1983, the "Original Pirelli" arrived on the market. It was based on the first generation, second series Golf GTI. A distinctive identifying feature: Specially designed alloy wheels with the "Pirelli P" on their outer edges. A remarkable 10,500 cars of the special model were built and sold within half a year. Then it was over - a limited edition! If there were an Automobile Hall of Fame for young-timers, the "Pirelli GTI", as it was called by its fans, would have long held a place there.

The legendary tire tracks of the young-timer are now being extended by the new Golf GTI Pirelli. And indeed with completely new Pirelli high-performance tires too. They are wrapped around powerful 18-inch Pirelli wheels in Titanium look. The car's interior has been upgraded with a partial-leather sports seat system that has an embedded tire tread pattern. Instead of the previous 112 PS the new car converts 230 PS into forward propulsion. If needed, a 245 km/h top speed is within the car's capabilities. In 6.8 seconds the Turbo-FSI propels the GTI Pirelli to 100 km/h from a standstill.

The Golf GTI Pirelli, conceptualized by Volkswagen Individual, will be presented in a worldwide debut between May 16 and 20. The occasion and site of this premiere are a perfect fit: The international GTI Meeting at Wörthersee, Austria. Production will begin in September.

Driving performance of the Golf GTI Pirelli.

A look at the numbers gives it away: 169 kW / 230 PS - those are the same performance values as the engine in the Golf GTI Edition 30 that arrived on the market in 2006 on the occasion of the GTI's monumental birthday. The 200 PS of the "normal" GTI were boosted by one PS for each year since 1976. Now this "jubilee engine" is also powering the Golf GTI Pirelli. The sports car races to the 100 km/h mark in just 6.8 seconds. But it can go even faster: When the GTI Pirelli is ordered with the optional DSG dual clutch transmission, the most powerful GTI of all times breaks through the magic "sound barrier" in 6.6 seconds. The GTI philosophy of agility is accompanied by the efficiency with which this Turbo-FSI goes to work: 8.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, or 7.9 liters with DSG, are evidence of the virtuosity with which Volkswagen masters the keyboard of engine building.

Tires and wheels of the Golf GTI Pirelli.

"Power is nothing without control", says Pirelli. Volkswagen sees it this way too. Chassis, brakes and ESP combine for a well-balanced safety package that can even perform masterfully on the North Loop of the Nuremburg Ring track. But things do not really get rounded out until the tires come into play. That is why Pirelli is contributing a new high-performance tire to the project: The latest generation of P-Zero tires. The material mixture and tread pattern of the 225/40 P-Zero were designed to benefit handling, braking, ride comfort and aquaplaning properties.

As in 1983, the tires are wrapped around Pirelli alloy wheels. They are coated with a Titanium-colored paint. The manufacturer interprets the visual effect of the five spokes as an homage to the wheels of the first Pirelli GTI. They had openings in the form of a P for Pirelli on their outer edges. This P is also found in the new wheel design - but in this case it is reflected: In the rim flange. However, there are worlds of difference between the dimensions of the two types of alloy wheels: They are 7.5x18 inch today, but were 6x14 inch back then.

Body of the Golf GTI Pirelli.

Bumpers and side skirts painted entirely in car color visually set the Golf GTI Pirelli apart from the 200-PS GTI. Recall that on this classic GTI, introduced at the end of 2004, the spoiler in front, the lower bumper section in the rear, and the skirt between the wheel housings on the sides were in black.

Similar to the GTI Edition 30, a plate with the Pirelli signature on the right side of the tailgate is a reference to this exclusive Golf GTI. In its side profile, the new car has standard tinted rear windows and another Pirelli signature can be seen here on the C-pillar of each side. Designers coordinated the color of the signature to the body paint color. Four of these are offered on the Golf GTI Pirelli. If "Blue graphite" or "Black magic pearl" is selected, the Pirelli signature is in silver. If the GTI - available as a two-door or four-door - is ordered in "Sunflower" or "Reflex silver", there is a black signature. "Sunflower" - a bright yellow - was created especially for this GTI. So if you look in your rearview mirror this coming fall and see something yellow with a black radiator grille growing larger very quickly, it can only be one thing: The Golf GTI Pirelli.

Interior of the Golf GTI Pirelli.

Just as distinctively as on the GTI Edition 30, the GTI Pirelli stands out from the rest of the model series with its refined interior. Take the example of the sports seating system: The standard GTI seats developed by Volkswagen Individual were upgraded to perfectly customize them for the GTI Pirelli: The anthracite colored lateral supports, seatbacks, head restraints and center armrests are upholstered in leather ("Vienna" type); yellow decorative seams provide a fine visual contrast. But the real highlight is the center seat panels. They are not made of the usual GTI "Interlagos" diamond pattern, rather of a breathable and very luxurious microfiber from the Italian producer Miko ("Dinamica" type): The tire tread pattern is embedded in the microfibers, which also sport the anthracite color. There is yet another accent in the front head restraints. Where the "GTI" letters are usually found, in this car the lettering is "Pirelli" throughout.

"Pirelli" equipment features also include heated seats, electrically adjustable lumbar supports in front, and all-leather center armrest in the rear. Under its counterpart in front, there is a storage bin that may be used optionally to house a CD-changer or MP3 player.

The leather sports steering wheel and parking brake grip have been retooled to match the top sports seats: They also have decorative yellow seams. In addition, the steering wheel with ergonomic hand recesses and perforated leather here support a sporty driving style. The vertical spoke of the steering wheel has a metallic Pirelli emblem as an accent.

Engine of the Golf GTI Pirelli.

It was 25 years ago when Volkswagen first introduced the era of downsizing on its first turbo-diesel. Of course, the Turbo-FSI on the GTI is technically unrelated to a turbo-diesel, but they have the principle of downsizing in common - in both cases engine displacement is replaced by engine charging. Approximately one decade after the first turbo-diesel, the direct-injection TDI followed. This engine extended the principle of downsizing to include the aspect of direct injection. This mix of technologies yielded lower fuel consumption and emissions, and more torque and power. On the Golf GTI, Volkswagen has transferred its 2004 downsizing concept to a powerful gasoline engine for the first time; its use of a turbocharger with intercooler plus direct injection brings fuel economy and sportiness in greater harmony than ever. The proof of this is measurable: The 147 kW / 200 PS and 280 Newton-meter strong Turbo-FSI of the "normal" GTI attains a top speed of 235 km/h and takes 7.2 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h. Average fuel consumption: Exceptionally low for a sports car at 8.0 liters per 100 kilometers. If the GTI is shifted by DSG, fuel consumption is reduced to 7.9 liters.

The Golf GTI Pirelli is proof today of the potential in combining gasoline direct injection and charging. Its turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine is currently the most powerful four cylinder engine from Volkswagen. This front-mounted transverse engine is shifted by a standard manual six-speed gearbox. The 16-valve four cylinder with 1,984 cm3 displacement outputs its maximum power of 169 kW / 230 PS at 5,500 rpm. Its maximum torque of 300 Newton-meters is available over a large speed window - from 2,200 to 5,200 rpm. Nothing is more befitting a sports car than this sort of torque characteristic.

And the efficiency of the charged VW direct injection gasoline engine is measurable here too. In spite of an extra 30 PS, 20 Newton-meters and 10 km/h top speed, compared to the 200-PS version the manually shifted Golf GTI Pirelli consumes just 0.2 liters more fuel per 100 kilometers. When shifted by a DSG dual clutch transmission, its fuel consumption is even identical at 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers!

Seat unveils the Altea Freetrack, based on the Altea XL

Seat unveiled its first off-road (in appearance) vehicle, the Altea Freetrack, a few days before its public debut at the Barcelona Motor Show in June. Seat unveiled a concept version of the Freetrack in Geneva and not many changes were made in the process.

The Freetrack will incorporate VW's four-wheel drive chassis, which transfers power to the front wheels under civilized driving, and up to 50% power onto the rear wheels when needed. The Altea Freetrack can be opted with two powertrains: a 2.0L TFSI petrol 200hp and a 2.0L TDI diesel producing 170hp. The Altea Freetrack, which is based on the Altea XL, will go on sale in Europe in September.

PRESS RELEASE: NEW SEAT ALTEA FREETRACK: The family adventurer

-The Spanish car maker’s first all-road car
-Four-wheel drive, 200 hp petrol and 170 hp diesel engines
-Rear seat multimedia system fitted as standard

At the upcoming Barcelona Motor Show from 7 to 17 June, SEAT will be presenting its first all-road vehicle – the Altea freetrack. After unveiling the prototype version in Geneva, which hinted at the new model’s silhouette, the definitive version can be seen in Barcelona and goes on sale this summer.

With this model, SEAT is making its debut in the SUV segment, an area of the market which has grown considerably in recent years. The new Altea freetrack is one of the few compact monospace cars on the market featuring clear off-road styling, as well as engines that deliver up to 200 hp. This factor proves the dynamic character of SEAT’s new all-road model, whose slogan “auto emoción” works just as well on- as well as off-road.

Exclusive off-road looks

Based on the Altea XL, the visual enhancements on the new freetrack include protective moulding below the waistline, as well as the specific plastic front and rear bumpers. These elements lend a rugged and robust image to the new model while also protecting the body when driving off-road.

The exterior stands out with new, exclusive design 17-inch wheels and larger diameter tyres. The Altea freetrack also has 40 mm more ground clearance than the Altea XL, making it easier for the new model to tackle any kind of terrain.

Top level performance

The Altea freetrack is available with four-wheel drive via a Haldex-type arrangement with a hydro-mechanical connection and electronic control, to ensure that the tractive force is distributed permanently in a progressive and precise manner. Under normal use, power is fully transferred to the front wheels, with up to 50% being distributed to the rear wheels when the need arises.

One of the most outstanding features of the new Altea freetrack is its engine range, with performance levels that make the new SEAT model the market’s most dynamic family-sized SUV. A 200 hp 2.0 TFSI petrol and a 170 hp 2.0 TDI diesel engine are responsible for taking the Altea freetrack over all types of terrain.

The 2.0 TFSI engine enables the newcomer to reach a top speed of 214 km/h, with 0 to 100 km/h taking just 7.5 seconds – yet it can still average fuel consumption of 9.4 litres. On the other hand, the freetrack 2.0 TDI reaches a top speed of 204 km/h, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and consumes an average of 6.8 litres for every 100 km of driving.

Besides these performance figures, the new Altea freetrack matches the Altea XL in terms of impressive interior space and generous load capacity. With its 593 litre boot, the freetrack can carry everything needed for the entire family’s hobbies and leisure activities.

The rear seats are exceptionally roomy and flexible, as they can slide back by up to 16 centimetres for added legroom while still allowing more than enough boot space.

Multimedia system as standard

The Altea freetrack will be sold with just one trim level featuring a complete set of standard equipment.

The most outstanding feature is a new multimedia system, which comprises a 7-inch TFT screen hinged on the ceiling and an RCA connection that allows connection to a DVD player, videogames, laptops and even MP3 players. This way the sound is transmitted over the car’s own sound system.

The Altea freetrack also features new rear window shades as standard, that are hidden inside the doors when not in use, leaving the view unobstructed for rear seat passengers.

Further standard-fit elements on the Altea freetrack include dual climatise control, rain sensor wipers, light sensor, parking sensors, cruise control, trip computer, plus CD MP3 radio and steering wheel mounted controls, among others. Safety highlights include standard ESP (Electronic Stability Control), six airbags, EPS electro-mechanical steering and tyre pressure warning.

Designed, developed and manufactured in Spain

The new Altea freetrack has been wholly designed and developed at the SEAT Technical Centre in Martorell, where over 1,000 highly qualified staff work daily to develop new models.

It will be exclusively made at the SEAT facilities in Martorell, one of Europe’s most modern and most flexible automotive factories, where the Ibiza, Córdoba, Altea, Altea XL, Toledo and León models are also produced.

VW Scirocco coming to US after all?

Motor Authority reported last month that the VW Scirocco successor won't arrive in the US. VW of America executive Adrian Hallmark stated "We don't want it," suggesting that it would cannibalize the GTI's sales. AutoWeek spoke with VW spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode and was told the Scirocco's future in the US was still a top consideration. However, he stated that the final decision will lie upon VW CEO Martin Winterkorn.

If the Scirocco is given the green-light for the US, expect it to arrive at the end of 2008. Until then, we'll wait on the final decision to be made. The Scirocco will share many components with the GTI. The production Scirocco will have minor design differences from the IROC Concept, which debuted at this year's Geneva Motor Show.

VW plans a next-generation Phaeton, only smaller

Volkswagen's Phaeton could not exactly be described as a run-away success. The German carmaker planned to make a modest 20,000 units, but only managed to sell a quarter that amount. But someone in Wolfsburg must have gotten an "if at first you don't succeed" fortune cookie, and they're determined to give it another shot.

The next Phaeton will save considerably on development costs by sharing its underpinnings with the next A6 from corporate cousin Audi. This, however, is no mere speculation: it comes straight from the mouth of CEO Martin Winterkorn. The end result will be a Phaeton smaller than the one it replaces, bringing costs down and bringing it slightly closer to the top-end Passat to help close the enormous gap in the Volkswagen model line-up.

The current slow-selling Phaeton cost Volkswagen a bundle to develop, but all was not lost as the platform ended up providing the basis for the more successful Bentley Continental range, with its coupe, cabrio and sedan variations. What will happen with the next Continental, you ask? Sources suggest that it will take its underpinnings from the latest Audi A8.

All in all this amounts to a change of direction for the German auto group, which has a history of investing heavily into new models which compete with offerings from their own subsidiaries.

Next Generation VW Golf launch delayed until the end of 2008

According to an interview that Ulrich Hackenburg, head of development for VW gave to Automobilwoche during the Shanghai Show, VW’s best selling model will not be replaced next spring as originally planned. Hackenburg told Automobiwoche journalists that the current Golf is still selling well and that there’s no time-pressure to replace it.

At least that’s the official line, cause unofficially, the company’s new boss, Martin Winterkorn, has postponed the 2008 Geneva Show premiere of the Golf VI as he was not pleased at all with the car’s appearance and ordered a complete redesign. In any case, the 6th-gen Golf is now scheduled for a late 2008 launch.

Hackenburg also informed journalist that the new Golf will get an updated version of Audi's 160Hp 1.8TFSI engine –probably with a GT badge since from what we’ve heard, VW is planning to stop the production of the 170Hp 1.4TSI motor due to reliability problems. As for the GTI, it’ll wear a more powerful version of the current 2.0 TFSI motor.

No Volkswagen Scirocco for the US

Volkswagen won’t be selling its upcoming Scirocco sport hatchback in the US, an all-new model due to enter production next year. After bowing out from the auto world back in the early nineties, VW is rejuvenating the Scirocco nameplate with a new hatch based on the Iroc concept car that debuted at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

“We don’t want it,” said VW America executive VP Adrian Hallmark in an interview with Automotive News. Despite the previous generation’s success, the new Scirocco won’t reach US shores because of fears that it would cannibalize sales of the GTI hatchback, also known as the Rabbit. “The GTI is iconic. It’s as strong a name as the Beetle,” Hallmark says, adding “it’s economically suicidal for us to risk the sales volume and the potential for GTI.”

Hallmark revealed that the Scirocco and GTI will share the same platform including the same 2.0L TFSI engine and chassis but will receive a lower ride-height. VW will instead focus on its sedan range in the US rather than the smaller coupe/hatchback market.

New York Preview: 2008 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

As expected, Volkswagen will introduce its Jetta Sportwagen in New York this week and we say it's about time, guys. Two years is too long. VW says to look for this sporty 2008 5-door in dealers this August with a 170-hp, 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine at first. The Germans will then offer the 2.0T 4-cylinder pumping out 200 hp. In January, VW promises a 2.0-liter diesel variation, as well.

The SportWagen's 32 cu. ft. of cargo space is fairly spacious compared to the competition. It can carry 5.4 cubic feet more of stuff than the Volvo V50 and 15.7 more than the Mazda 3 wagon. Lay the VW's back seats down and the space more than doubles to 66.9 cubic feet, which is getting on up into Passat Wagon territory. Continuing with the whole little is big theme, an optional 12.7 square foot panoramic roof is available.

Pricing has yet to be made official, but VW Vortex is guessing about $1,000 over Jetta sedans, so somewhere in the upper teens, lower 20s.

Preview: 2008 Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen’s drawn out gestation for its Tiguan compact SUV is approaching its end and this latest rendering shows that the final production version is likely to be almost identical to the concept car displayed at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. Aimed as a rival for popular soft-roaders such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota Rav 4, the new Tiguan will feature a foldable rear bench and seating capacity for five.

[Source: Motor Authority]

Continued- Article

The key differences to the concept version is the toned down front-end styling, less flared arches and smaller 17in alloys. Underpinning the new Tiguan is an upgraded version of the platform used for the VW Golf range, with the biggest change being the wider track and taller ride-height. The Tiguan is expected to be sold with FWD in base models and optional 4WD that will be standard for upscale models.

Under the hood will be range of new Bluetec diesels and efficient FSI gasoline engines. Expect the 2.0L “Clean TDI” Bluetec diesel engine that was displayed at the LA Show to appear with an estimated 170hp on tap. Other powerplants should include VW Group’s 200hp 2.0L TFSI as well as a more powerful 280hp 3.6L V6.

The Tiguan should hit showrooms by the end of the year with pricing expected to start around $24,000.

Bugatti boss Thomas Bscher resigns

In a surprise move, the head of Bugatti Thomas Bscher has resigned and it’s rumored that he left his post because of the frustration faced under the leadership of Volkswagen AG boss Martin Winterkorn. German newspaper Der Spiegel reports that Bscher was a key backer for the introduction of a second Bugatti model, but when asked about the possibility of a new model, Winterkorn acknowledged that it might be Bscher’s wish, but added “some wishes will stay dreams.”

[Source: Motor Authority]

The head of VW AG’s Works Council, Bernd Osterloh, has said that it was conceivable for Bugatti to launch a second model, telling reporters “if the synergies in the company are used correctly, I can imagine seeing a second model from Bugatti.” However, he also said that Bugatti models in the future must make a return of between 12 and 13% and the priority at the moment is for VW to make money in the luxury segment with its Phaeton sedan.

The focus of the company is now placed on VW with Winterkorn determined to move the brand up market. VW will also concentrate on releasing its new entry-level model positioned below the Fox hatch that’s due for release by 2009 with prices starting below €8,000.

Geneva: 2008 Volkswagen Phaeton

It's not coming here, no need to get out of your chair. The Phaeton picks up a new nose, a ton of little tweaks, a new 3-liter TDI V6, and will be on sale in Europe this summer. It's a wonderful car -- gorgeously appointed and scrupulously assembled. Unfortunately, the marketing didn't connect enough Phaetons with owners, so it has been banished from US showrooms.

A shame, really, as VW's already dreamy dreamboat picks up a passel of safety gear and the aforementioned new diesel that meets Euro V emissions standards while remaining the ultimate showcase of VW's formidable tech integration chops. We like the new face, which keeps the Phaeton in line with the corporate look of Volkswagen. It's always been a stealth bomber, and it still maintains its Passat-in-a-double-breasted-suit look, which will help you fly along under the radar of most drivers (and constabularies, hopefully) while enjoying sumptuous appointments and a vaultlike structure.

PRESS RELEASE:

2007 Geneva Motor Show - Phaeton
Top Model with New Technical Features and First Euro-5 TDI

Innovation: Phaeton with new V6 TDI satisfies Euro-5 standard that goes into effect starting in 2009

Perfection: Systems like Front Assist and Side Assist for even greater safety
Wolfsburg, 06 March 2007

At the Geneva Motor Show Volkswagen is presenting a generation of the Phaeton that is equipped with numerous technical innovations. Modifications and new equipment details will already flow into ongoing production starting at the end of May.

NEW V6 TDI
233 PS TDI is the first large diesel of the corporation to fulfill the Euro-5 standard; standard that goes into effect in 2009 calls for 80 percent reduction in particulate limits

A technological highlight of this engine: The Phaeton with V6 turbo-diesel engine will be the first car model of the corporation, and one of the first cars worldwide, to already fulfill the Euro-5 standard that goes into effect in 2009. In this context, one change compared to the Euro-4 standard is that required limits for soot particulates are 80 percent lower – the new Phaeton V6 TDI car version fulfills these requirements with its new 171 kW / 233 PS common rail direct-injection engine.

Compared to the now retired V6 TDI, the new engine adds eight PS, but at 9.6 liters per 100 kilometers it does not by any means consume any more fuel. CO2 emissions at 259 g/km are also very low for a luxury class car. Driving performance of the standard all-wheel drive and now 236 km/h fast Phaeton V6 TDI were also slightly improved. Alternatives to the TDI on the new version of the Phaeton are three gasoline engines (V6, V8 and W12) that offer a power range from 177 kW / 241 PS to 331 kW / 450 PS.

NEW TECHNICAL FEATURES
Front Assist stopping distance reduction, Side Assist lane change assistant, new DVD navigation system, modified infotainment system, new headlamps

Technical changes and new systems implemented for the first time on the Phaeton, besides the V6 TDI, include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) now with a new Follow-to-Stop function, "Front Assist" stopping distance reduction, "Side Assist" lane change assistant and automatic activation of the low-beam lamp during faster Autobahn driving (starting at 140 km/h after ten seconds) and in case of rain. Also new: The navigation system now has DVD support and many new functions, in parallel to navigation a similarly modified infotainment system with haptically and visually optimized control buttons and a new voice-controlled Bluetooth telephone with auxiliary Bluetooth receiver and memory capacity of up to 1,000 telephone book entries (up to four numbers may be saved per entry). A new tire pressure control system also offers an even higher level of safety and operator convenience.

In the exterior area, advanced development of the generation is recognizable by its additional chrome accent strips in the lower area of the front apron and newly designed bi-xenon headlamps. Integrated here are the dynamic and static cornering headlamps as well as newly designed LED daytime running lamps. The LED daytime running lamp – arranged as a narrow, horizontal strip in the lower area of the headlamp housing – is automatically activated with ignition. Another 19-inch alloy wheel type was also newly designed.

FRONT ASSIST AND SIDE ASSIST IN DETAIL
Front Assist occasionally reduces stopping distance by important meters; Side Assist contributes to preventing side collisions

Front Assist: A technological highlight is the Front Assist stopping distance reduction system. It serves to prevent front end collisions. The system utilizes a radar sensor to monitor the distance to vehicles in traffic in front of the Phaeton. When they approach too closely the driver is informed in two stages. At the same time the vehicle is prepared for possible hard braking by the driver. In certain situations the system preventatively puts the brakes in a preconditioned status ahead of time; otherwise they would only become active when the driver actuates the brakes. This is how the new system achieves Stopping Distance Reduction (AWV).

Side Assist: Another new assistance system is the Lane Change Assistant (Side Assist). This system monitors the area in back of and next to the Phaeton via radar sensors in the rear bumper (one sensor each for areas to the left and right of the vehicle), and it signals a potential collision risk via an indicator light in the outside mirror housing. The sensor monitoring range is about 50 meters to the rear and 3.60 meters to the sides of the sedan.

Geneva: 2008 Volkswagen Golf Variant

Yesterday in Geneva, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn officially introduced the world to the new Golf Variant. Early reports, including a VW press release issued in late February, indicated that the car would launch with a pair of gasoline and a pair of diesel engines. The official word at Geneva has changed to include just one gasoline engine and a pair of TDIs. The 1.4L TSI 4-cylinder won't appear in the car at launch...a last-minute change, from the looks of things. The press release pasted after the jump still mentions "two gasoline engines" in a section that didn't get the required edit. The absence of the TSI makes the 2.0 TDI the top-flight engine in the new wagon. It generates 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque while sipping fuel at a rate of 42 mpg. That seems pretty impressive to us, and we're sure the economically-minded TDI driver will be able to wring even more out of it in terms of fuel economy.

[Source: Autoblog]

Continued- Article, hi-res image gallery, official press release

Stylewise, the car wears the familiar corporate mug up front and a totally new look in the rear. The taillights don't intrude onto the rear liftgate itself, in a move VW says is designed to emphasize the width (read: utility) of the rear opening. When you open said hatch, you can dump in 24 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats in place, or 54 cubes with them folded down. The passenger cabin gets VW's typically deluxe-looking attention to detail, and is highlighted by an optional and trendy panoramic glass sunroof. The roof looks great, but it'll probably be one of the pricier checkboxes on the option sheet.

It'll be sold in three trim levels -- Trendline, Comfortline, and Sportline. We're drawn to the lowered, slick-looking Sportline (above) and it's eye-catching wheels. Our friends in Europe will be able to take delivery of the Golf Variant this summer. No word on when we'll receive it (probably as the Jetta Wagon). With any luck, the New York Auto Show will bring more answers on that front.

PRESS RELEASE:

2007 Geneva Motor Show - Golf Variant
Europe's Number 1 New Station Wagon

World premiere: New Golf Variant debuts at the Geneva Motor Show

World's bestseller: More than 1.2 million Golf Variant cars produced since 1993
Wolfsburg, 06 March 2007

For 45 years now, Volkswagens with extra-large cargo areas have been called – unless they are a van – "Variant". To date, more than 6.1 million of them have been sold worldwide. Now there is a new one: The Golf Variant. The third generation of the Golf Variant will be presented in a world premiere at the International Geneva Motor Show (March 8 to 18). Its market introduction is scheduled for this summer, initially in Europe.

This wagon, which is as spacious as it is variable, is being supplemented with the addition of a third – and fourth – body version to the successful Golf product lineup. Version 1: The classic Golf, the "icon", including the "GT", "GTI" and "R32". Version 2: The Golf Plus with greater height, higher seat position and longitudinally adjustable rear bench seat. The new CrossGolf, which is based on the Golf Plus, is also being launched currently. Version 3: The Jetta; although it is not called a Golf, in its DNA it is one. For years now, this version has proven to be the most successful car of any German car producer in America. The new version 4: The Golf Variant –not only as a TDI that outputs 77 kW / 105 PS and is economical (5.2 liters diesel per 100 km) and clean (137 g/km CO2).

1,550 LITERS CARGO SPACE
Recipe for success: Impressive cargo space dimensions with reasonable exterior dimensions

More than 1.2 million Golf Variants have been sold over two model generations since 1993. The new generation of the five-door Volkswagen is meant to continue this success story. Once again, the Golf Variant is characterized by an ideal ratio of interior and exterior dimensions. This is precisely what has always been a key factor in its formula for success: Impressive cargo space dimensions together with reasonable exterior dimensions. The new Golf Variant is not any different in this regard: When the cargo net is installed (standard starting with Comfortline), even with five occupants on board the Golf Variant can carry 690 liters of cargo; up to the load sill at the window level this still amounts to 505 liters (without spare wheel well). When the rear bench seat is folded, the full interior height (0.83 meters) can be utilized, and up to 1,550 liters of cargo can be stowed in the 4.56 meter long Volkswagen.

FLAT LOADING AREA
1.74 meter load length and up to 629 kilograms payload capacity

When the rear bench is folded, the continuously flat cargo area of the new Golf Variant measures 1.74 meters up to the driver's seatback. There are additional storage compartments under the cargo area and in its side trim. Even if the asymmetrical split bench is not lowered, a respectable 1.07 meters of cargo space depth is still available. The maximum width: 1.29 meters. Another dimension that is crucial when it comes to cargo capacity: Payload capacity. And here too the new Golf Variant has a whole lot to offer with 607 to 629 kilograms capacity (depending on engine version). And it is easier to load cargo with a liftover height of just 57 centimeters.

DESIGN
Synthesis of new and classic stylistic elements;
all Golf Variant cars characterized by insignia radiator grille

A synthesis of new and classic style elements marks the design of the third Golf Variant. In its silhouette, the lines of the new Volkswagen definitely forge links to the Passat Variant. Nevertheless, from this side perspective the Golf Variant also exhibits a high level of autonomy. One unmistakable characteristic: The taillights that wrap around far into the car's flank.

The rear end of the new Variant shows an entirely new side of the Golf. While about half of each taillight is integral to the rear hatch on other body versions of the model series, on the Golf Variant they are integrated completely in the fender. Visually, the taillights emphasize the large load width of the hatch opening. And it is actually over one meter wide. Simultaneously, the rear design of the Golf Variant attains a very independent character due to the newly designed taillights.

Typical Volkswagen design characteristics, analogous to those of the Passat Variant, are the rear window that wraps around to the D pillars (also an indicator of large load width) and the roof edge spoiler that acts as a trailing edge to optimize aerodynamics (increased tread pressure, better fuel economy). Air resistance coefficient: cW = 0.31. In parallel, spoiler accentuates the decidedly sporty image of the new Golf Variant.

The front end design is distinguished by the chrome-plated insignia radiator grille. This is also reflected in the chrome bumper protector strips. Taken 1:1 from the general model series were its headlamps (optional bi-xenon for low and high beam lamps), fenders and engine hood.

ONE GASOLINE AND TWO DIESEL ENGINES
105 PS TDI with 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 137 g/km

At its market introduction Volkswagen will be offering the Golf Variant with two gasoline and two diesel engine options. The gasoline engine outputs 75 kW / 102 PS. The two diesels of the Golf Variant deliver even more power with extraordinary economy: 77 kW / 105 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS, and they are among the most efficient engines ever. The smaller of these two TDIs is content with just 5.2 liters fuel per 100 kilometers. CO2 emissions: Just 137 g/km. Moreover, the large TDI of the new Golf Variant is as fuel efficient as it is environmentally friendly. In spite of its hefty maximum torque of 320 Nm, the Golf Variant 2.0 TDI, which can attain speeds up to 205 km/h, consumes just 5.6 liters fuel per 100 kilometers. Its CO2 value is 148 g/km. Like the Golf, Golf Plus and Jetta, the Golf Variant will also be available with different six-speed automatic transmissions, including the DSG dual-clutch transmission.

THREE EQUIPMENT LINES
Standard roof rails beginning with "Trendline"; "Comfortline" and "Sportline" with climate control

Like the "classic" Golf, the new Golf Variant will also have the "Trendline", "Comfortline" and "Sportline" equipment lines. Even the "Trendline" base model exhibits extensive convenience and safety features including six airbags and ESP. All versions get bumpers and accent protector strips in car color, as well as a chrome insignia radiator grille and roof rails.

Buyers of the Golf Variant Comfortline also get 16-inch alloy wheels ("Misano" type) with 205 tires, "Climatic" semi-automatic climate control system, "comfort seats" in front (including adjustable lumbar support and center armrest), a rear seating system with center armrest and cargo pass-through feature, automatic dimming rearview mirror, and sensors for rain and driving lights. The Golf Variant Sportline comes with standard features such as a sports chassis lowered by 15 millimeters, sports seats in front, 16-inch alloy wheels ("Atlanta" type) with 205/55 tires, on-board computer, leather sports steering wheel and identical climate control system. Volkswagen Individual is also planning a special exclusive version of the new Golf Variant.

PANORAMA SUNROOF
Transparent sunroof is 1.36 meters long and 0.87 meters wide

As a feature of all versions of the Golf Variant, there will be a newly designed panorama sunroof. With a length of 1.36 meters and a width of 0.87 meters the transparent sunroof spans a large section of the interior, providing for a light-filled, friendly ambiance. The roof consists of two halves, the front section of which can be raised as well as completely opened. To preserve full interior height, the opening segment is driven out above the closed section of roof. An electrically-powered sunshade can be used to protect against intense sunlight.

Recall: VW recalling 790,000 vehicles for brakelights issues

Volkswagen has discovered that a previous recall of 362,000 vehicles (1999-2002 Jettas and 1998-2002 New Beetles) for a defective brake light switch actually affects a much larger range of vehicles. The German automaker is extending the recall to an additional 790,000 vehicles that include 1999-2006 Golf and GTI models, 2001-2005 Jettas, 2001-2007 New Beetles and the 2004 R32. The possibility exists that brake light switches in these vehicles may have been installed wrong, which could lead to their remaining on all the time or not working at all. In an extreme possibility, some vehicles with automatic transmissions might be immobilized if the brake light switch can't be activated so that the transmission can be shifted out of Park. When the new recall begins in April, VW dealers will install a new brake light switch free of charge for owners of the affected vehicles. If you think your vehicle is included in the recall or have any questions, you call VW at 1-800-822-8987.

Geneva: 2008 Volkswagen Golf Variant

Volkswagen has just launched the new wagon version of its popular Golf hatch, which picks up the Golf Variant title in following with previous generation models of the estate. Measuring an extra 36cm over the regular Golf, the Variant offers up to 690L of storage space with five passengers on board. Fold down the rear seats and you’re looking at a load space of 1550L.

Unique exterior features include the new tail lamps that wrap around the sides of the rear fenders as well as the tail gate. The Variant will initially be launched with two gasoline and two diesel engines, which includes a 1.4L 140hp (103kW) “Twincharger” TFSI model. The diesel engines produce 105hp (77kW) and 140hp (103kW), with mileage rates of just 5.2L/km and 5.6L/km respectively.

The car will be unveiled for the first time at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, with sales scheduled to start by mid this year.
